Postdoctoral Fellow, Plant SciencesPrimary Purpose: We are seeking a motivated Research Assistant to support a project focused on phenotyping pea breeding populations using UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) imagery. The successful candidate will be involved in developing and implementing UAV-based phenotyping methods, as well as coordinating ground measures in experimental nurseries. The primary focus of this position is to utilize UAV imagery to extract image based digital phenotypes from field pea to select for superior genotypes.Nature of Work: This research is supported by a UAV team to gather crop imagery and pre-process data along with an experienced image analysis lab. The successful candidate will work with directly with the Crop Development Centre Field Pea breeding program and the Agronomic Crop Imaging lab at the University of Saskatchewan.Accountabilities: The Post Doctoral Fellow will report to the principal investigator /supervisor and work in a team environment with other research associates and graduate students.The ideal candidate will start work as soon as possible in the winter of 2024/25.Education: B.Sc/Post-graduate in Crop Science, Plant Breeding, Crop Physiology, Data Science or related degree with relevant experience.Licenses:Experience: Experience with programming for data science, in languages such as Python/Matlab/R is essential.

  • Experience working with large image-based remote sensing datasets is desirable
  • Knowledge in crop breeding, crop genetics and experience in digital crop phenotyping is an asset.
  • Experience in image analysis techniques will be an asset.
  • Experience with machine learning techniques such as random forest analysis is an asset
