Position Summary
The Social Safeguards Field Assistant will support the implementation of social safeguards measures across all Volcanoes National Park (VNP) conservation and development projects. This role is crucial in ensuring that project activities respect local communities’ rights, cultures, and livelihoods while promoting positive social outcomes. This position will work closely with other field assistants and project partners. The position will be for an initial one year, with possibility of extension based on performance and project needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the implementation of social impact assessments for project activities, with particular focus on data collection related to land acquisition and livelihood changes
- Assist in implementing social safeguards plans under the guidance of the Program Officer, ensuring alignment with national regulations and international best practices
- Support community consultation processes and assist in community engagement activities by helping with logistics, documentation, and follow-up actions
- Assist in monitoring social safeguards measures and contribute to compliance reports by collecting and organizing field data across project components
- Assist in the development and implementation of grievance redress mechanisms by helping maintain documentation and supporting follow-up with community members
- Work collaboratively with team members to support the integration of social safeguards considerations into project activities, providing administrative and logistical support as needed
- Participate in regular field visits to project sites and assist in collecting data on social impacts and community feedback through surveys and interviews
- Contribute to the preparation of social safeguards-related reports by gathering and organizing field data, maintaining documentation, and assisting with draft reports for donors and stakeholders
Requirements and skills
- Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, Anthropology or Development Studies.
- At least 3 years of experience in social safeguards or community development work.
- Knowledge of international social safeguards standards and best practices.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to work effectively with diverse communities.
- Fluency in English and Kinyarwanda; knowledge of French is an advantage.
- Willingness to spend significant time in the field and travel to remote areas.
