POSITION HIGHLIGHTS:
First-Shift
Part-Time (20 hours per week)
Monday – Friday 10:00am – 2:00pm
This position is not eligible for telework
Incumbent will be appointed to a part-time Mail Handler position after successful completion of training and meeting minimum, special and physical requirements within a period of time not to exceed one (1) year.
ABOUT US:
We are a unique dual-status agency, having both federal and state missions. The CTMD’S primary public responsibilities are:
(1) To support the CT National Guard enabling the National Guard to provide ready units for Federal or State requirements;
(2) To train, resource and coordinate state emergency response assets, and;
(3) To plan for and protect citizens and their property in times of war, terrorism, invasion, rebellion, riot or disaster.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state agency this class is accountable for receiving on-the-job training in the receipt, processing, and distribution of mail.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Receives training to perform tasks as outlined in the specification for the class of Mail Handler;
- Sorts, distributes, and routes incoming and interoffice mail;
- Weighs and operates automatic postage application equipment, scales, mail inserters, and related mail equipment;
- Answers customer and organizational questions regarding postage, various USPS mail categories and processes;
- Maintains logs of incoming and outgoing mail and deliveries;
- Maintains related equipment;
- May work with postal equipment vendors to maintain equipment and accounts;
- May be required to open and inspect mail;
- May sign for mail;
- Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any experience and training which would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Willingness to learn and apply general knowledge/training in postal rules, regulations and procedures.
- Experience functioning independently in a fast-paced environment.
- General experience of US Mail.
- Willing to travel statewide.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
- A physical examination may be required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights.
