Salary: $82,400 – $103,000

Responsibilities & Duties

Over the last few years of CDP’s 15-year history, growth has been exponential. CDP has granted over $123 million to more than 676 nonprofits, influenced and educated numerous philanthropists, and grown its donor base and partnerships. CDP’s positioning and increased visibility bring a need for additional capacity.

Over the last 12 months, CDP’s staff count has increased by about 30%, with additional projected increases in 2025.

The senior accounting manager, general ledger & budgets, plays a critical role in the execution of CDP’s financial operations and supports all areas of general ledger and accounting operations. Reporting to the director of finance and operations (DFO), this role will hold primary responsibilities in general ledger maintenance, restricted fund tracking, budget development and tracking, period-end closing, and audit support. The ability to cultivate relationships and the flexibility to adapt to a growing organization’s changing needs and priorities are essential in this role.

As a fully remote workforce, CDP prioritizes employee engagement and relationship-building in service of a collaborative culture rooted in equity. To this end, in-person team retreats are scheduled throughout the year in different regions of the U.S. This role will be expected to attend 2-3 retreats per year, which average 3-5 days of travel.

Primary responsibilities include:

The senior accounting manager, general ledger & budgets holds primary responsibilities in general ledger maintenance, restricted fund tracking, budget development and tracking, period-end closing, and audit support.

The senior accounting manager, general ledger & budgets serves as a trusted partner to the DFO to deliver against CDP’s financial priorities in alignment with its mission and values.

General ledger maintenance

  • Oversee all CDP general ledger accounts to facilitate and ensure accurate and timely month-and-year-end closing and reporting.
  • Perform regular monthly reconciliations of all balance sheet accounts, excluding cash accounts but including five investment accounts in equities and fixed income.
  • Manage and report on numerous, complex and high-volume restricted, unrestricted and inter-fund funds.
  • Manage chart of accounts including assets, liabilities, revenues, expenses, cost centers and other dimensions in the general ledger.
  • In concert with the DOF and finance team, evaluate and upgrade general ledger systems, tools, integrations, and options.
  • Propose, draft, log, substantiate, audit and record journal entries of a highly complex nature.

Restricted fund tracking

  • Serve as a thought partner to the DOF in developing systems to accurately and timely track and report on all additions to and releases from our numerous, complex and high-volume restricted funds.
  • Work closely with the finance team and other internal stakeholders to ensure restricted funding is recorded accurately and released in compliance with donor intent, organizational policies and generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Leverage existing tools and research and recommend new tools and system integrations to aid in efficient, accurate, and timely tracking and reporting of restricted and other funds.

Budget development and tracking

  • Use general ledger and other electronic data processing (EDP) systems to develop, enter, track, update and report on budgets of various types, including operating budgets, capital budgets, investment budgets, personnel budgets, restricted funding proposals and grant budgets, and department and program budgets.
  • Work closely with the DOF to help develop a suite of regular reporting for internal and external stakeholders that will provide accurate and timely budget-to-actual figures, including variance analysis and a KPI dashboard.
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to help evaluate, select, implement and manage updated general ledger, enterprise resource planning (ERP), and other finance and accounting tools.
  • Provide technical assistance to staff by helping them understand and interpret regular financial results, researching questions and resolving budget and reporting issues.
  • Assist with the evaluation, selection and implementation of budgeting, forecasting and reporting tools and systems.

Month-end close, year-end close and audit support

  • Work closely with the finance team to maintain and manage detailed period-end closing processes, checklists and schedules to ensure timely and accurate month-end close and interim year-end reporting.
  • Support year-end close process and audit preparation.
  • Assist with audit schedules, document requests, field work, and other audit and compliance-related needs.

Other duties and responsibilities

  • Document and maintain up-to-date standard operating procedures and workflow processes for all job duties.
  • Work closely with finance, operations and the broader CDP team to identify and implement technology, integration, workflow and other efficiencies.
  • Understand current nonprofit GAAP, FASB and AICPA standards and translate these pronouncements into meaningful internal operating processes.
  • Contribute and help guide the development of a finance intranet(s) to codify internal accounting practices and provide visibility to internal and external stakeholders on how to navigate accounting and finance practices and easily locate relevant data and resources.
  • Cross train with the accounting manager, revenue and disbursements to provide mutual backup and redundancy.
  • Other duties as required.

This position reports to the DFO but works in service of the whole organization.

Required qualifications

  • 7+ years of specialized knowledge and expertise in nonprofit accounting and/or relevant technical expertise with at least 3 years in a managerial role.
  • Degree in finance, accounting or business administration; or equivalent nonprofit fund-accounting work experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee multiple high-level, complex and multi-faceted fiscal functions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and make decisions with considerable latitude.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate, summarize and explain complex financial matters to staff, leadership and other stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships and influence at all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Deep skill level in utilizing general ledger software and subsidiary ledgers (CRM, HRIS, etc.)
  • Passion for technology and automation.
  • Excellent MS Office and especially Excel skills.
