Founded in 1987 by the late David Packard, MBARI is a nonprofit oceanographic research center advancing marine science and engineering to understand our changing ocean. Located in Moss Landing, California, the heart of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, MBARI offers ready access to the open ocean and deep sea. Reporting to Facilities Operations Manager, Greg Voogd. The Facilities Maintenance Technician ensures that all MBARI buildings, interior, exterior, and grounds are properly maintained. This includes, but is not limited to, inspection, preventative maintenance, and repair of concrete finishes, wood, and steel framed walls, sheetrock, painting, doors, windows, rolling gates, office furniture, etc. Also assists in the proper operations and storage of equipment at MBARI’s offsite storage facility.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Assist the Facilities EM Tech with the operation and maintenance of HVAC, plumbing, water treatment system, chilled water system, cooling tower and condenser water system, boilers, and hot water system.
  • In person periodic maintenance inspections and virtual monitoring of building equipment on the BMS to analyze trends to verify proper operation of mechanical equipment.
  • Maintaining a clean, safe working environment.
  • Cross-train with other technicians and staff in preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairing building structures/finishes, mechanical, plumbing, and other areas as appropriate.
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies and alarms as required.

Required qualifications:

  • A minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of five years of related experience in building maintenance or building trades.
  • Solid experience with complex building construction and building systems.
  • Knowledge and experience with proper and safe usage of hand and power tools.
  • Proven ability to perform repairs.
  • Must be computer literate, many systems throughout the Institute are automated including the Facilities work order system.
  • Must possess the ability to read, understand, and work from drawings, specifications, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Must be knowledgeable of local and state building codes and OSHA regulations as they apply to building maintenance, operations, and construction
  • The incumbent must possess excellent analytical and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to effectively and positively work as part of a team and individually when necessary.
  • Must be able to work with diverse groups of people.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills in order to interface with employees courteously and professionally.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces and on rooftop and be comfortable on ladders.
  • A valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
  • Requires activities involving being around moving machinery.
  • Trade school certification or college credit or degree desired.
  • Forklift, scissor lift, and overhead crane experience are desired.
