Job Description and Duties

DTSC seeks a Senior Environmental Scientist project manager to join a team of environmental scientists, toxicologists, geologists, and engineers within the Berkeley Site Mitigation and Restoration Program. You will manage the investigation and cleanup of complex or large contaminated properties in the San Francisco Bay Area, including projects in environmental justice communities. As a Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) you will have the opportunity to:

  • Oversee and implement the investigation and cleanup of assigned complex hazardous substance release sites under the cleanup process applicable to each site, which may be the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) process, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) or State corrective action process, or one of the processes under the California Health and Safety Code
  • Review site documentation including historical land use and operational information, regulatory records research reports, environmental assessments, project scoping documents, field work plans, sampling reports, and Preliminary Endangerment Assessment reports to determine if a hazardous substance release has occurred at a site that may pose a threat to public health or the environment, and to determine whether further characterization is required
  • Conduct site visits and inspections to verify compliance with approved investigation work plans
  • Work with staff within DTSC, other regulatory agencies, responsible parties, project proponents, local agencies, developers, landowners, contractors, and attorneys to ensure site cleanups are expeditious and protective of human health and the environment
  • Develop project schedules to monitor and guide the progress of site cleanup documents and activities
  • Maintain ongoing communication with responsible parties, project proponents, and consultants regarding project schedules and issues that may impact project schedules

Desirable Qualifications We Look For:

  • Experience managing large, complex, high-profile, or politically sensitive sites
  • RCRA and/or CERCLA experience
  • Experience managing project scopes/schedules/budgets
  • Experience preparing and delivering briefings to senior leaders
  • Experienced mentor
