Employment Duration: 3 months (w/ potential for extension)
This position offers the opportunity to work in the clinic and infusion areas within a thriving community cancer practice.
Under supervision of the Administrative Nurse, guided by policies and procedures of the Ambulatory Services, and in collaboration with the Clinical Nursing Staff, the Hospital Assistant III (Medical Assistant) assists in the delivery of care to patients in multiple Cancer Center ambulatory group practices. This position supports the Cancer Services, Ambulatory Services, and Infusion Unit.
The Medical Assistant performs assigned patient care and laboratory procedures in support of specialty care services provided to patients within the practices. The position requires the ability to assist in all Cancer Center specialty practices and adherence to Medical Center Telephone and House Standards. Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is required.
- Validate and document patient-reported information
- Obtain, report, and document vital signs
- Follow established safety, environmental, and infection control standards
- Perform routine clinical functions including:
- Vital signs
- Height and weight measurements
- Pain screening
- Documentation of chief complaints
- Document use of interpreter services and coordinate interpreter participation for appointments
- Assist with medication reconciliation by helping patients update medication lists
- Assist nurses, providers, and patients in preparation for exams and procedures
- Perform sterile processing procedures in outpatient clinics, including Cidex OPA processing and maintenance of appropriate logs
- Assist in complex medical procedures such as:
- Laser procedures
- TRUS
- Colposcopy
- Anoscopy
- IRC
- Complete required competencies for specialized procedures
- Serve as chaperone for medical providers as needed
- Float across all Cancer Center Adult Infusion Services
- Transport patients safely as directed
- Monitor patient flow throughout clinic operations
- Obtain specimens and perform Point of Care Testing, including QA/QC, EKGs, and AccuChek testing
- Perform laboratory procedures according to specimen handling and processing policies
- Maintain required logs including temperature, disaster cabinet, and crash cart logs
- Provide patient comfort items such as juice and blankets
- Order and maintain patient care amenities and supplies
- Assist clinical staff with warming towels and blankets
- Complete referrals ordered by physicians
- Obtain insurance authorizations for medications
- Perform clinical activities accurately and in a timely manner
- Assist physician staff with patient communications
- Comply with all Ambulatory Services and Medical Center policies and procedures
- Complete annual competency testing
- Ensure medication cabinets remain locked at all times
- Collaborate with all members of the practice team to coordinate patient care
- Maintain professional telephone communication standards
- Uphold Medical Center House Standards
- Notify providers of patient delays and service issues
- Communicate provider delays to front office staff and waiting patients
- Share pertinent patient information with healthcare team members
- Identify and communicate problems to nursing staff or supervisors
- Offer suggestions for operational improvements
- Assist patients with issues and complaints using conflict management skills
- Coordinate care and resolve patient care issues using Mercury Messaging phones
- Utilize the Electronic Health Record (APEX) for documentation within scope of practice, including:
- Vital signs and pain documentation
- Patient history entry
- Medication and allergy documentation
- Point of care test ordering and documentation
- Telephone encounters and staff messaging
- Scheduling laboratory, radiology, and other testing
- Maintain clean and stocked exam rooms, hub rooms, and laboratory areas
- Order and maintain supplies and laboratory equipment
- Review laboratory logs and print results for providers as requested
- Obtain insurance authorizations for medications, procedures, and reviews
- Maintain biohazard and chemotherapy waste bins
- Schedule complex procedures and coordinate patient services
- Coordinate staff lunch coverage
- Adhere to infection control and equipment sterilization procedures
- Participate in quality improvement and customer service initiatives
- Perform other duties related to patient care activities as required
Required Qualifications:
- Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations
- Candidates must meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Certificate of training or graduation from an accredited MA, Home Health Aide, PCA, CNA, dental, or paramedic program, or a college degree in a related field such as community health, infectious disease, public health, or health education with 6 months of relevant experience
- OR 2 years of relevant experience as a Medical Assistant in a hospital or medical practice
- Knowledge and abilities essential to successful job performance
- Ability to communicate effectively in person and over the phone
- Ability to meet physical requirements of the position
- Current American Heart Association CPR Certification
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience working in an oncology healthcare setting
- Experience with:
- Insurance verification
- Medical record data abstraction
- Medical assisting
- Patient financial services
- Degree from an accredited medical assisting school
- Bi-lingual or multi-lingual capability (Spanish, Cantonese, or Russian)
- Current State of California Phlebotomy Certification (CPT1)
Required Qualifications:
