POSITION DETAILS

Guttman Community College at CUNY seeks an Academic Student Support Program Specialist for pre-college programs such as College Now, CUNY/Math Start, and related programs. Reporting to the Associate Director of Pre-College Programs & Academic Success, the Academic Student Support Program Specialist for pre-college programs will be responsible for conducting comprehensive individual and group student orientations, information sessions and interviews, academic advising, performance feedback sessions and conferences, skills development seminars, workshops, recruitment/outreach, new student orientation and other activities on campus and at city high schools. These activities will enable successful pre-college program enrollment, completion, college transition and matriculation. They may also work with a set group of students to cultivate and oversee their educational and advisement plans.

In addition to the CUNY Title Overview, responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

• Provide academic and college success advice; skill improvement, college readiness, and navigation strategies; general guidance, coaching, mentoring, and career exploration support.
• Monitor, evaluate, document, and report on students’ academic participation and progress, ensure compliance with guidelines, and manage records and files.
• Advocate for students, intervene with appropriate program support services and referrals to faculty, campus learning resources and/or University student development services.
• Deliver program curricula and create training manuals and educational support materials.
• Assist with coordinating regular team meetings with faculty, academic and administrative staff, and actively participate in campus and University meetings and training activities.
• Participate in executing the program’s daily operations and logistics.
• Support analysis of program data, assist with evaluating goals, and develop measurement criteria to perform student learning outcomes assessments and create utilization reports.
• Help with student engagement and recruitment events on campus and at city high schools.
• May supervise and train full/part-time professional, academic, and/or office support staff.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Director.

• Evening and weekend hours are mandatory.

CUNY Start is an intensive pre-matriculation program for incoming associate-degree seeking CUNY students who need to increase their academic proficiency in English and/or mathematics prior to enrollment in college credit classes. Math Start, based on the CUNY Start math curriculum and advisement model, enrolls students who have been accepted to CUNY but have not met CUNY proficiency standards in mathematics. CUNY Start/Math Start programs may deliver services and instruction in multiple formats: in-person, online or as hybrid models that are both online and in-person. Online work may entail the use of platforms such as Brightspace, Zoom, and other remote instructional tools that are available and approved by the University and which support the goals and practices of the program. College Now is CUNY’s major collaboration with New York City Public Schools (NYCPS). Its defining goal is to help students graduate from high school prepared for success in college through participation in a broad array of awareness and preparedness programs. The goal of the program is to help students earn college credits or become college ready before graduating from high school. QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree and four years’ related experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Demonstrated experience in academic advising, career advising, and/or student development with diverse student populations, particularly underprepared high school or college students in an educational setting or college prep program, required
• Facilitation experience in adult or developmental education and using a holistic and strengths-based approach to student development preferred
• Knowledge of learning strategies, accommodations, and accessibility services
• Strong presentation, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills to successfully work with and present to diverse learners and audiences
• Experience working with linguistically, culturally, and academically diverse students
• Strong work ethic, character and personal integrity, and ability to work with the utmost professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality
• Detail oriented with strong organizational, writing, proofreading, and editing skills with solid analytical, evaluative, and research skills
• Ability to work well in a time-sensitive, dynamic, student centered and responsive office
• Experience working in collaborative settings preferred
• Computer proficiency using standard office software programs/applications
• Evening and weekend hours availability.

• Assists in developing and preparing program offerings, curricula, guidelines, and related communications
• Promotes program and advises students and College stakeholders on services, policies, and procedures
• Advises faculty, counselors, tutors, administrators and others on program goals, activities, and best practices
• Provides student services such as workshops, seminars, and advising sessions
• Coordinates efforts of faculty, staff, and other service providers to monitor and assess utilization, student progress, and program effectiveness
• Performs related duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$64,649 – $75,465; Salary commensurate with education and experience.
