Job Announcement
Manages ordering of library collection materials and is the subject matter expert for acquisitions at the Fairfax County Public Library (FCPL).
Understands managing and reporting on funds, works with Receiving staff and vendors to reconcile order and shipping issues with vendors, ensures outstanding orders are claimed in a timely manner, works with collection services coordinator and assistant coordinator to ensure timely and accurate spending of funds for a given fiscal year. Promotes knowledge of acquisition ordering policy and practices through training. Works with vendors to ensure appropriate configuration of templates for Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) ordering, for enriched EDI records, and/or for EDI invoicing and claiming of unfulfilled orders. Ensures library brief/vendor record profiles are up-to-date and match current procedures. Identifies, selects, acquires, receives, and distributes federal, state, county, and local documents to be added to the collection and/or for public review. Oversees the distribution of informational materials for cultural, educational, recreational, and governmental agencies and organizations. Manages the distributed selection and centralized ordering of periodicals; ensures standing orders are loaded into acquisition module appropriately upon receipt and acceptance; works with collection data analyst to create effective reporting of acquisition data. Answers inquiries from the public and staff. Performs other duties as may be assigned to further the goals and objectives of the FCPL. Works u nder the direction of the collection services coordinator.

The selected applicant’s starting annual salary will be in the minimum to midpoint range ($61,257.25 to $81,676.61) of the advertised compensation range. Compensation rules apply per Fairfax County personnel regulations for current Fairfax County Government and Fairfax County Public Schools employees.
Schedule: Scheduling flexibility is imperative. Occasional overtime may be required.

Promotes and represents Library System before outside groups;
May develop informational finding tools;
May select, train, supervise, and evaluate subordinate personnel;
May facilitate staff meetings;
Answers informational and reference questions from customers using print and electronic resources;
Assists and instructs customers in the use of print and online materials and technology;
Advises and assists customers in the selection of books, periodicals, media, and other materials;
Plans and provides programs and outreach to customers of all ages;
Maintains collection by weeding, marketing, and merchandising library materials;
Troubleshoots library computers and reports unresolved problems through proper channels;
Performs copy cataloging of library materials;
Identifies materials to be considered for addition to the library collection;
Remains current in resources, services and technologies in the information field;
May supervise volunteers.

Performs advanced technical work in a specialized program area within Technical Operations;
Addresses the more difficult and complex discovery and reader advisory services;
Resolves non-routine patron and staff interactions by communicating and interpreting library policy for staff and the general public;
Interacts with library vendors;
Assists Coordinator with collection-related matters;
Promotes knowledge of collection policy and practices through training;
Coordinates system-wide collection initiatives;
Manages the field mapping and loading of brief records;
Utilizes existing reports and recommends new reports to inform selection, evaluation, and cataloging decisions;
Resolves complex cataloging issues;
Executes book-in-hand original cataloging of non-fiction works;
Promotes and represents Library System before outside groups;
May partner with external agencies to support library and county-wide initiatives;
May select, train, supervise, and evaluate subordinate personnel;
May develop informational finding tools;

Ability to provide subject matter expertise in a specific area within Technical Operations, e.g. a specific collection area, cataloging rules, acquisition methodology, or report querying and metrics;
Knowledge of and experience with assigning Library of Congress Authority headings for general cataloging (Cataloging librarians);
Knowledge of and experience with assigning classification schema for general cataloging (Cataloging librarians);
Knowledge of and experience working with specialized software used to support collection, acquisition, cataloging, inter-library loan and reporting.
Employment Standards
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree from an ALA (American Library Association) accredited library school and one year of professional library experience.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Possession of a certificate issued by the Virginia State Board for Certification of Librarians (Required within 3 months)
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and child protective services check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Three years or more of professional library experience.
Experience working with library vendors.
Experience with county procurement procedures.
Experience working with integrated library systems.
Experience with MARC (machine-readable cataloging) records.
Strong attention to detail, and ability to multitask and manage priorities.
Experience working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders.
Experience selecting, deselecting, or evaluating a library collection of significant size and breadth.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to lift up to 20 lbs. Ability to perform repetitive hand, arm, wrist and shoulder movements. Ability to push and pull 4-wheeled book bins filled at 90% capacity, requiring 20 lbs of initial (starting) force, and a sustained force of 10 lbs after initial acceleration. Ability to push and pull 4-wheeled book carts filled at 70% capacity, requiring 14 lbs of initial (starting) force, and a sustained force of 7 lbs after initial acceleration. Ability to stoop, bend, reach, squat, and kneel. Ability to travel to various locations throughout Fairfax County to provide coverage, attend meetings and trainings. Physical requirements are applicable to all duties. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
