Role: Administration / Jury Officer

About us

HM Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is responsible for the administration of criminal, civil and family courts and tribunals in England and Wales. We are looking for individuals who are committed to public service and to making a difference in people’s lives to deliver justice. 

What will you be doing?

This multi-faceted customer facing role will see the successful candidate undertaking a mixture of Administration and Jury Officer responsibilities.

Being a Juror is one of the most important duties a UK Citizen can perform. Our Jury Officer’s provide support to the Jury, including providing initial direction to the Jury and being a point of contact to them throughout their time as a Juror. A key duty in this role is the initial Jury Officer speech to Jurors, which can be to a group of between 50 and 100 people, each of whom will have their own questions and concerns. 

Administration Officers are responsible for ensuring cases progress through the court/tribunal system and providing support to court / tribunal users, including members of the Judiciary and the legal profession. The role will include general administrative duties and will require dealing with members of the public, defendants and outside organisations.

Working as part of a flexible team, you will undertake a range of specified functions and responsibilities. Problem solving is carried out using Continuous Improvement techniques (e.g., problem-solving hubs) and comprehensive guidelines and instructions.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Undertake the Jury Officer’s speech to new Jurors, providing them with the key information and helping them understand their responsibilities.
  • Communicate effectively and work with the Judiciary, the Court Managers, Court staff, and other internal / external stakeholders.
  • Assisting court users, supporting listing and rota management, checking files.
  • Collecting and Assembling Information.
  • Preparing papers and/or digital files for court, tribunals, hearings and meetings.
  • Creating and updating records on in-house computer system and data input.
  • Handling counter (face to face), written and telephone enquiries.
  • To work to workload targets in terms of throughput and accuracy.
  • To deliver a helpful, prompt, polite and “right first time” service to our internal and external customers.

Do you have the skills needed?

  • Strong customer focus and service skills.
  • Experience of working in an administrative role in a customer focussed environment.
  • Proficient with IT, with the ability to learn new systems and packages.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • Customer service and administrative skills.
