Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner – Pediatrics Cardiology

The Stead Family Department of Pediatrics is seeking an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner to join our Division of Pediatric Cardiology. This position will work with faculty physicians, APPs, and other members of the care team by independently providing excellent patient care in the outpatient general cardiology clinic including patients with heart murmurs, chest pain, irregular heartbeats and syncope (or fainting). In accordance with scope of practice as outlined by applicable state law, regulations, institutional policies and practice agreements, the position will conduct comprehensive health history and physical assessments, establish medical diagnoses, order and evaluates diagnostic studies, and develop treatment plans. This position will primarily be located in Davenport, IA and will be expected to travel to Dubuque, IA to staff in the outreach clinic.

Duties to include:

  • Obtains and documents a health history; performs and documents complete, system-focused, or symptom-specific physical examination, assessment, and plan of care.
  • In collaboration, provides healthcare services for primary, acute, and complex care of patients and manages patient’s overall care, initiates appropriate referrals and consultations, and identifying expected outcomes for diagnoses.
  • Orders, performs, interprets, and collects data using appropriate assessment techniques, relevant supporting diagnostic information and diagnostic procedures where indicated.
  • Forms differential diagnoses and treats acute and chronic conditions.
  • Prescribes therapeutic interventions both pharmacologic, non-pharmacologic and surgical/procedural, needed to achieve expected outcomes.
  • Utilizes evidence-based, approved practice protocols in planning and implementing care.
  • Provides specialty specific consultation services upon request and within specialty scope of practice.
  • Facilitates the patient’s transition between and within health care settings, such as admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.
  • Participates in departmental educational conferences and clinical care meetings.
  • Accurately and appropriately complete documentation of patient care in the electronic medical record (EMR) and other records for compliance, billing, and other regulatory standards.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as requested/assigned

About the Division of Cardiology:

The Division of Cardiology at the University of Iowa Stead Family Department of Pediatrics provides compassionate, family-centered, and state-of-the-art delivery of care to children and young adults with congenital and acquired heart disease. Patients are followed through the transition to adulthood. Dedicated staff have expertise in acquired heart diseases such as cardiomyopathies, cardiac arrhythmias, congenital heart disease, cardiac dysfunction in malignancy, and cardiac implications associated with pediatric obesity. The division provides the only expertise for electrophysiology, diagnostic, advanced imaging, interventional and transplant services for children and youth in the state of Iowa. Skilled surgical support and exceptional critical care postoperative support has outcomes that have excellent results in national databases. The division has a multi-purpose diagnostic and interventional procedure lab which is constantly expanding and including state-of-the-art technologies.

Required Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree is required. A Master’s degree in Nursing is preferred. If Master’s degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in nursing is required.
  • Current certification as Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) and or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)
  • Current ARNP license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with indirect supervision and critical thinking/problem solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Federal DEA license
  • Knowledge and experience in cardiology and or pediatrics

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in the clinical care of pediatrics.
  • Knowledge and experience in ambulatory care.
  • BLS/PALS
