Overview

The Advisor, Global Health Technical Proposal Writer supports proposal research and design and serves as a lead or contributing writer on specific proposal opportunities. The Advisor will also enable Jhpiego to develop, implement and continually improve processes which improve the efficiency and effectiveness of proposal preparation.

With the primary role of proposal writer, the Advisor may also support crafting messages and pitches to donors to advocate for furthering or implementing Jhpiego’s strategy.  We seek a creative, pro-active and passionate professional with a growth mindset who thrives on playing a key role turning ideas into action, working with and through technical and multi-disciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

Proposal Preparation

  • Serve as lead or supporting writer for technical narrative of new funding opportunities (open, competitive procurements as well as concept notes and invitations from donors), working with teams composed of technical and program staff to produce a proposal that is cohesive, responsive to the donor, and compelling.
  • Assures quality narrative following proposal-writing standards, including readability, consistency, and tone, weaving in text from different writers, eliminating redundancies, connecting ideas coherently which speaks with “one voice”.
  • Lead and/or contribute to strategic positioning, design, and collate inputs from proposal team during the ‘leads’ development phase of upcoming procurements
  • Participate as a member of the proposal team to support the design lead and/or facilitate project design
  • Support conceptualization and creation of graphics (e.g., theory of change, log frame, conceptual framework) within the technical narrative, in collaboration with design lead, and orient teams as needed
  • Improve how Jhpiego approaches project design and writing to optimize competitiveness, responsiveness to the donor, and project outcomes and disseminate best practices and lessons learned to writers and design leads across departments
  • Lead and/or contribute to the establishment, improvement, and dissemination of processes, tools, and templates for writers that will help prepare detailed and responsive technical proposals
  • Serve in an advisory role regarding questions of strategy and organizational positioning for future business
  • Develop and/or lead special projects either within NPD, or with relevant staff appointed from each department, including global programs, information technology team, human resources and finance and administration
  • Help to identify factors that contribute to Jhpiego’s competitiveness and work with proposal teams to address gaps

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, international development. Advanced degree is preferred.
  • Demonstrated record of writing successful proposals or other products to support resource mobilization efforts
  • 5 to 7 years’ experience in designing, developing, drafting, implementing or managing public health projects
  • Demonstrated success working with cross-functional teams of clinicians, public health specialists, and program managers, prioritizing needs, developing action plans and executing initiatives
  • Strong ability to articulate cogent, concise and compelling proposal narrative from technical and programmatic design inputs, aligned with proposal win themes and organizational value proposition
  • Ability to efficiently assess responsiveness of narrative to donor requirements, identify and address gaps with core proposal team
  • Ability to effectively convey information about project needs, in many cases to those who might be unfamiliar with the details
  • Strong change management, results-oriented and decision-making skills
  • Experience and understanding of multiple donor frameworks including CDC, USAID, and private sector donors
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing and oral presentation skills
  • Articulate cogent, concise and compelling proposal narrative from technical and programmatic design inputs, aligned with proposal win themes and organizational value proposition
  • Proven knowledge of USAID and large foundation donor programming and technical procurement procedures
  • Efficiently assess responsiveness of narrative to donor requirements, identify and address gaps with core proposal team
  • Effectively convey information about project needs, in many cases to those who might be unfamiliar with the details
  • Engage content experts to extract, synthesize and articulate program and technical insights into compelling narrative
  • Acumen interpreting and translating donor priorities, interests and frameworks into responsive proposal narrative

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years field experience in one or more regions (Africa, Asia, and/or Latin America)
  • Ability to strengthening capacity of colleagues in the above knowledge and skills
  • Fluency, oral and written, in a second language French (most preferred), Portuguese or Spanish

The hourly rate for this casual role is expected to be $50.00/hr

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
