Position Summary The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) provides comprehensive health care for assigned patients/community as determined by scope of practice guidelines and specialty. This includes completion of a health assessment, determining diagnosis, planning and prescribing treatment within the parameters of medical staff privileges at UI Health and area of expertise. The APRN participates in the educational experiences of nursing students, medical students, residents and other health care disciplines. The APRN is required to have and maintain a faculty appointment in order to receive clinical privileges to practice at UI Health.
Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage the care of patients within assigned area and/or area of expertise and within parameters of medical staff privileges.
  • Obtain relevant patient health history. Study and interpret patient tests and records.
  • Perform physical exam and record findings.
  • Perform various diagnostic, preventive and/or therapeutic procedures and/or order special screenings and developmental or laboratory tests to diagnose conditions; interpret results.
  • Prescribe/order appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions and develop a treatment plan.
  • Develop an educational plan for patient/family.
  • Assist with scheduling of patients for upcoming procedures including coordinating with other services (division, departments) and completion of necessary documentation, scheduling forms and clearance.
  • Order appropriate consultation/referral.
  • Determine effectiveness of treatment plan with documentation of treatment provided and patient outcomes.
  • Reassess and modify plan with patient/family and treatment team within the parameters of medical staff privileges.
  • Participates in the educational experiences of nursing students, medical students, residents and other healthcare disciplines. By being involved in case conferences, serving as a preceptor and mentor, assisting with curriculum development and instruction.
  • The Advanced Practice Nurse is required to have and maintain a faculty appointment in order to receive clinical privileges to practice at the University of Illinois Health System.
    DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC DUTIES
  • Obtain and/or extract relevant patient records
  • Enter treatment data for cancer survivor patients into Passport for Care, internal admin user for CHUI Hem-One Passport webserver
  • Educate patients/families based on Children’s Oncology Group Long Term Follow-up Guidelines
  • Clinical follow up visits with survivor patients based on COG guidelines
  • Liaise with families regarding follow-up of clinical issues and labs
  • Liaise with research Pis and coordinators regarding study recruitment for Pediatric and Adult Oncology Services
  • Liaise with supporting institutions/grantors
  • Assist in recruitment and retention of eligible patients
  • Assist with grant applications and metrics/graphics for reports
  • Develops and provides ongoing education programs for staff and healthcare providers, to ensure availability of current information regarding patient care and maintenance/enhancement of clinical skills.
  • Works with the Children’s Oncology Group personnel, coordinating research monitoring visits, audits, sets up initial clinical research procedures, subject recruitment and retention, data entry, and arranges and distributes subject reimbursement
  • Serves as a consultant and/or resource person for hospital personnel in area of specialization. Accepts referrals and collaborates with physicians, nurses, and other members of the interdisciplinary team in planning the care of patients needing specialized nursing. Initiates referrals to other healthcare providers and resource agencies as needed.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
    Minimum Qualifications
    • Master’s Degree in Nursing or Doctorate of Nursing Practice required.
    • Graduation from accredited APRN program.
    • Current license as a Professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice.
    • Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois required.
    • Certification as an APHON Pediatric Oncology Nurse
    • A minimum of three (3) years of related experience in pediatric oncology is required.
  • Extensive data management experience, including the use of Children’s Oncology and Cancer Group studies. Knowledge of COG protocols and ability to extract treatment data including cumulative chemotherapy and radiation treatment doses from medical records. Experience using the Children’s Oncology Group Long-Term Follow-up Guidelines for Survivors of Childhood, Adolescent and Young Adult Cancers. Knowledge of, or ability to learn data input skills for Passport for Care (PFC) survivor website, an internet-based HIP M compliant tool which provides survivors of childhood cancer and their health care providers with the individualized, accurate, and timely health care information necessary to maximize their health potential.
  • Excellent communication, organization, presentation and computer/PC skills, along with proficiency in EPIC, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel…) and other related database and software applications.
