Context:The archeologist will bring his contribution to the ALTO project.The ALTO project is a major infrastructure initiative in Canadian history, aimed at developing over 1,000 km of new passenger rail service between major urban centers, including Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City. Missions/Main Duties:

  • Conduct, coordinate, and supervise archaeological potential assessments as part of impact studies for major linear infrastructure projects (such as intercity passenger transport, freight transport, tramways, etc.).
  • Oversee diagnostics, surveys, and preventive excavations, in collaboration with technical partners and regulatory authorities.
  • Draft and validate technical reports, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and adherence to deadlines.
  • Advise project teams on heritage issues and propose measures for the mitigation or enhancement of archaeological heritage.
  • Participate in project meetings and represent the archaeological discipline to various stakeholders (project owners, government agencies, local authorities).
  • Organize and lead communication and awareness initiatives about archaeological findings for the public and project stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with First Nations as part of archaeological studies.

Profile/Skills:Education: Master’s or PhD in Archaeology, or an equivalent recognized qualification. Additional training in project management or heritage regulations would be an asset.Years of Experience: 5 to 10 years of professional experience, ideally acquired on large-scale projects or in complex environments (linear, urban, or rail projects).Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in preventive archaeological excavation, diagnostic, and evaluation methods.
  • Good knowledge of the legal and regulatory framework applicable to archaeological work and heritage management.
  • Ability to write high-quality study reports and to synthesize scientific data.
  • Proficiency in GIS (Geographic Information Systems) tools and archaeological databases.
  • Experience managing archaeological sites in constrained environments.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in both French and English.*
  • Requirement for bilingualism: You will have the opportunity to work with a diverse clientele, including both French-speaking and English-speaking organizations. Bilingualism is therefore essential to build strong relationships with clients, understand their specific needs, and communicate effectively in their preferred language.
