Description

Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM) offers one of the most forwardlooking educational environments in dental medicine in the country. Since its founding in 1868, TUSDM has been committed to leadership in education, patient care, research, and community service. Students obtain an interdisciplinary education integrated with medicine, with access to training in dental specialties. Clinics at TUSDM provide quality comprehensive care to more than 20,000 individuals annually. Nationally and internationally, the School promotes health and educational programs and conducts research on new procedures, materials, and technologies to improve oral health.

The Department of Diagnostic Sciences includes four distinct recognized specialties of dentistry and two CODAaccredited advanced graduate dental education programs. The Department is focused on teaching, research, and patient care, with faculty, residents, and staff managing head and neck disorders including cancer, temporomandibular joint disorders, autoimmune diseases, and oral manifestations of systemic disease.

The Department of Diagnostic Sciences at TUSDM is seeking a Pathologist at the Assistant or Associate Professor level to oversee biopsyrelated diagnostic workflows and serve as the institutional point of contact for pathology coordination. This faculty member will work closely with the Diagnostic Sciences Clinic team, submitting clinicians, external pathology laboratories, and cancer registries to ensure timely, accurate, and compliant diagnostic reporting in support of patient care, education, and institutional operations.

Although not exhaustive, the following outlines the primary responsibilities of the position. Percent effort is approximate and may change based on departmental needs.

Responsibilities

Diagnostic and Biopsy Workflow Oversight (~60%)

  • Oversee the internal biopsy workflow, including specimen dropoff at the designated 6thfloor location.
  • Ensure creation and maintenance of biopsy logs in Box and availability to the Diagnostic Sciences Clinic team.
  • Coordinate specimen pickups with external pathology laboratories on scheduled days (Monday, Wednesday, Friday).
  • Serve as the primary liaison between TUSDM and contracted external pathology laboratories (e.g., Strata).
  • Ensure finalized pathology reports are received via fax, email, and laboratory portals.
  • Supervise upload of finalized pathology reports into Axium and ensure submitting providers are notified.
  • Confirm appropriate use of Axium biopsy forms and that additional requisition forms are not required when Axium documentation is complete.
  • Supervise completion of all biopsyrelated documentation and ensure institutional compliance.
  • Direct patientspecific diagnostic questions to the external pathologists who signed out cases.

External Case Management and Registry Coordination (~20%)

  • Coordinate outgoing external cases sent to Strata, including scheduling specimen pickup.
  • Manage incoming external pathology cases received from cancer centers nationwide.
  • Handle all requests for pathology slides and tissue blocks received by TUSDM.
  • Serve as the primary pathology contact for the new Cancer Registry and manage all associated requests and reporting.
  • Monitor and manage the TOPS email inbox, addressing report requests, insurancerelated inquiries, and external communications.

Quality Assurance, Documentation, and Compliance (~10%)

  • Serve as the institutional point of contact for pathology documentation within Axium.
  • Collaborate with the Diagnostic Sciences Clinic team to distribute, upload, and archive reports and related documentation.
  • Conduct audits of biopsy workflows and documentation as deemed appropriate by the School.

Supplies and Facilities Oversight (~5%)

  • Oversee biopsy supply logistics, including supplies provided by external laboratories.
  • Coordinate pickup of biopsy supplies from centralized locations.
  • Ensure appropriate handling and storage of formalin, recognizing that required quantities necessitate a designated, compliant lablike space.

Service and Other Duties (~5%)

  • Participate in departmental and school service activities as assigned by the Department Chair.

Clinical Scope

The submitting clinician retains responsibility for patient followup and ongoing clinical management. This position focuses on diagnostic oversight, coordination, documentation, and institutional compliance rather than direct patient treatment.
