About the Role:

The Wall Street Journal’s Opinion section is looking for a talented editor to join our book review team in New York as an Assistant Books Editor. This person will be responsible for editing daily and weekend book reviews tailored for the global audience of the Journal’s print edition and website, and copy editing reviews assigned by other editors. They will be expected to clearly communicate their edits to the writers. In coordination with fellow book-review editors, they will also assign reviews to freelance contributors on topics including business, history, politics, science, literature and other fields. Additionally, the Assistant Books Editor will coordinate the presentation of book reviews for online, mobile apps and other channels, by sourcing illustrations and photos. They may occasionally contribute their own book reviews to the section. This position will be based in our New York office.

You Will:

  • Serve as editor on several reviews per week, working with authors to mold raw copy into publishable form.
  • Provide copy-editing reads, checking for factual accuracy, readability, legal concerns, sensitivity and house style on reviews being edited.
  • Occasionally contribute original bylined book reviews for the daily Bookshelf column and the weekend Books section.
  • Contact publishers to obtain PDFs of books for fact-checking and advance copies of books to send to reviewers.
  • Source illustrations and photos to accompany reviews. 
  • Inspect and proofread the printed pages to ensure the quality of the physical presentation. 

You Have:

  • College graduate with at least 2+ years editing and copy-editing experience, preferably with an emphasis on nonfiction or journalistic prose.
  • The position requires someone who is extremely detail-oriented and who has a thorough command of grammar and syntax.
  • Experience with desktop publishing would be an asset.
  • The ability to work under deadline pressure.
  • Flexible to do weekend/evening work as required.

Pay Range: $75,000 – $95,000
