Salary/Grade: EXS/32
Target hiring range for this position will be between $190,000-$200,000 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
Job Summary:
The Assistant Football Coach reports to the Head Football Coach. This is a full-time appointment renewable on a contract basis, April 1 through March 31.
Please note: Willingness and ability to work a non-traditional schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays as required.
Specific Responsibilities:
Coaching
- Assist the head coach in coaching and training the Northwestern football team; for developing and conducting all in-season and out-of-season sessions throughout the year as deemed necessary and appropriate.
- Help with the psychological preparation of team in both pre-game and post-game; and for developing motivational approach to practice and games.
- Work to develop comprehensive knowledge of football in decision-making, delegating authority and in setting and meeting objectives.
Administrative
- Must be fully knowledgeable and adhere to all rules and regulations of the NCAA. Big Ten Conference (as applicable) and Northwestern University as amended from time to time.
- Work with appropriate Northwestern University Department of Athletics and Recreation (NUDAR) staff in preparing for all home football games.
- Cooperate with the Athletic Communications Department and the Marketing Department in publicizing and marketing Northwestern Football.
- Compile and maintain individual and team statistics for all games; provide statistics to Athletic Communications for their use.
- Assist in the conduct of the football camps.
Recruiting
- Help the head coach in the recruiting of top student-athletes, commensurate with the admissions qualifications of Northwestern University who are capable of successfully competing at the Big Ten level. Maintain good relations with the parents of prospective and current student-athletes.
Alumni Relations, Public Relations, and Development
- Responsible for the maintenance of sound alumni relations. In cooperation with the appropriate Associate Director, also responsible for promoting and participating in various alumni events.
- Assist Development in fundraising efforts on behalf of the Department and the University.
- Responsible for maintaining good public relations with the public news media, and working with the Departments Assistant Athletic Director/Athletic Communications in promoting Northwestern University. Maintain amicable public relations with faculty, staff, students and media of the University; friends, alumni support groups and secondary school coaches.
- Responsible for adhering to all Department and University policies and procedures, as well as the rules, regulations, bylaws and interpretations of the Big Ten Conference and the NCAA.
Other
- Demonstrate a cooperative attitude towards all sports in the Intercollegiate and Recreational programs.
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics or the designated Associate Director of Athletics.
- Responsible for adhering to all Department and University continuing education initiatives and required certifications and trainings.
- Responsible for adhering to all Department and University policies and procedures, as well as the rules, regulations, bylaws and interpretations of the Big Ten Conference, CSC and the NCAA.
Miscellaneous
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
-
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.

Significant experience coaching or playing at the collegiate level or working in an athletic department setting; specifically in at the Division 1 or professional level.
