Job Introduction
BBC Gaeilge is the BBC’s multiple-award winning, multimedia production and commissioning base in Belfast, Northern Ireland with a reputation for developing creative talent and excellence in programming in radio, digital and TV. We are a small, dynamic in-house team producing and commissioning around 250 hours of primarily live, Irish language radio broadcast content. BBC Northern Ireland also commissions and broadcasts around 25 hours of originated programming for TV in the Irish language, produced by the local independent production sector.
BBC Gaeilge has a number of long running radio strands broadcast throughout the year – Blas, Blas Ceoil, Caschlár and many other shorter series.
Blas is BBC Radio Ulster’s flagship Irish language magazine programme and is broadcast on BBC Radio Ulster and BBC Sounds between 19.30-20hrs, Monday-Thursday.
Blas Ceoil is BBC Radio Ulster’s Irish language traditional Irish and folk music show and is broadcast on BBC Radio Ulster and BBC Sounds between 20-21hrs, on Thursdays.
Caschlár is our world music show broadcast through Irish on BBC Radio Foyle and BBC Sounds between 20-22hrs, on Mondays.
Our diverse output means that Assistant Content Producers are required to work across a variety of genres and take initiative on the content creation within programme strands.
There are two complementary and equally important parts to this role so good time management is essential:
1) Contributing to the team’s creative vision, contributing content ideas, helping develop the ideas of others, creating creative packages, live reports, vox pops, written billings and scripts, supporting the team and output in the studio by being the physical point of contact for contributors, presenters and producers during live / pre-recorded broadcasts as required.
2) Administrative duties which ensure payment of contributors, music reporting, copyright, purchase orders, other specific programme paperwork etc.
Main Responsibilities
- The aim of the job is to assist the Producer in the production of radio programmes in their designated slots in the live schedule. An integral part of the role is to contribute to the development and maintenance of the associated digital platforms. Working as part of a wider multi-media team, the successful candidate will contribute to the development of Irish language output across radio, online and other digital platforms based on a clear understanding of the needs of audiences and commissioners.
- As an Assistant Content Producer, you must be a team player who has a passion for engaging and informing the local audience, coming up with solid programme and story ideas and employing diligence in the administrative side of your role.
- You will help the producers set up the programmes by coming up with ideas, researching stories, finding suitable contributors, recording and editing interviews, recording and editing audio, visual and written content for programme websites and social media platforms, billings, scripts, press and undertaking key administrative duties. You will provide support for live programmes, so you will be expected to coordinate the arrival of guests, process audience correspondence, and make on-air contributions in the form of pre-recorded vox pops or packages, or live reports.
- You will also be a confident user of social media and appreciate the opportunities to exploit social media for the department, individual programmes and presenters, within BBC Guidelines.
- You will work across various types of programmes (for example magazine style, documentaries, factual series and music programming) and your working hours will vary – sometimes our work schedules can change in order to reflect operational and output needs so we need you to be able to work flexibly.
- We want someone who is interested in and enthusiastic about life being lived through Irish, and how the voices of this community can be heard and their stories told.
Are you the right candidate?
You will have:
- Fluency and accuracy in written and spoken Irish.
- Strong journalistic skills, research and audio editing techniques.
- Creative, lateral thinking towards storytelling for radio output and digital platforms.
- Experience working in a broadcast or content production environment with excellent teamworking skills.
- Experience using and entering data into systems.
- Ability to prioritise while working to tight or changing deadlines.
About the BBC
The BBC is committed to redeploying employees seeking suitable alternative employment within the BBC for different reasons and they will be given priority consideration ahead of other applicants. Priority consideration means for those employees seeking redeployment their application will be considered alongside anyone else at risk of redundancy, prior to any individuals being considered who are not at risk.
We don’t focus simply on what we do – we also care how we do it. Our values and the way we behave are important to us. Please make sure you’ve read about our values and behaviours here.
Diversity matters at the BBC. We have a working environment where we value and respect every individual’s unique contribution, enabling all of our employees to thrive and achieve their full potential.
We want to attract the broadest range of talented people to be part of the BBC – whether that’s to contribute to our programming or our wide range of non-production roles. The more diverse our workforce, the better able we are to respond to and reflect our audiences in all their diversity.
We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and/or belief. We will consider flexible working requests for all roles, unless operational requirements prevent otherwise.
