The professorial rank will be determined according to the candidate’s qualifications and experience. This is a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.The Department of Pediatrics is a leader in academic medicine. Our educational and research missions support excellent and innovative clinical programs across our teaching hospitals. The Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) is a major teaching hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec.The MCH is a 150-bed hospital with 18 bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (12 acute, 6 step down), a 52- bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. All pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties are represented at the MCH. The Division of Pediatric Critical Care offers state-of-the art care using a multidisciplinary team approach for critically ill or injured neonates, children and adolescents. The unit is a major provincial, national and international referral center. The Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine currently has 10 members and 1 associate member including 3 full professors, 3 associate professors, and 4 assistant professors.In addition to full-service tertiary care, the unit’s members have proven academic strengths in multiple fields –health sciences education, epidemiology, health services and patient safety/quality improvement, post PICU follow-up, organ donation and transplantation and knowledge translation research.Job Duties
The successful candidate will be a member of the Contract Academic Staff with the profile of an academic clinician. The incumbent will be a staff physician within the Division of Pediatric Critical Care at the Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH), McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). We are specifically seeking a Pediatric Intensivist with Neurocritical Care expertise, focusing on multimodal neurological monitoring and cerebral hemodynamics.The successful candidate will have clinical and academic expertise on cerebral blood flow bedside monitoring and brain-based resuscitation targets in patients with shock states related to: cardio-cerebral coupling, neurovascular coupling, brain-heart-lung interactions, and hemodynamic support targets to optimize brain perfusion during shock and cardiac arrest states.Their job duties will include:1) Clinical Work (0.6 FTE):Be an active member in the pediatric critical care unit and associated clinical areas (ECMO, transport, outreach, trauma etc.). Clinical work includes engagement in paraclinical and educational collective activities of the division, including, but not limited to, programs such as simulation and quality improvement. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and implement a clinical program in our PICU focusing on the use of bedside multimodal neurological monitoring for all patients with or at risk for brain injury and work with existing teams including neurology and neurosurgery to develop brain care driven protocols for hypoxic-ischemic brain injury, CNS infection, CNS autoimmune disorders, neuromyopathies, seizure disorders and neurodegenerative/metabolic disease. They will also be expected to implement sensory enhancement techniques to enhance recovery.2) Academic (0.2 FTE):The successful recruit is expected to develop an academic profile in neurocritical care research. Specifically, they will work with the PICU liberation and post PICU follow-up teams on brain-based care and outcomes. They will also create a pediatric emergency neurologic life support curriculum to export basic ICU brain care to ER and community hospitals and develop a bedside ultrasound curriculum. Supervision of trainees and participation in the functioning of the pediatric critical care medicine subspecialty training program is also expected, including playing a significant role in the education mission of the Division, at the undergraduate and postgraduate medical education level, as well as to our interdisciplinary education mission.3) Administrative (0.2 FTE):The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to, and potentially lead, a variety of dossiers, including and not limited, to medical student/resident coordinator, fellowship program director, ECMO medical director, research program director.The successful candidate will also be expected to be actively involved in all aspects of McGill’s academic mission (i.e., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees).McGill faculty members are expected to contribute to service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community. A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is also expected.Qualifications and Education RequirementsCandidates must:

  • Hold an MD degree or equivalent, and hold or be eligible for, licensure in the province of Quebec;
  • Have postgraduate clinical training in pediatrics;
  • Have completed specialty training in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine with certification by the Collège des médecins du Québec or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent);
  • Have at least one year of supplementary post-fellowship training in Neurocritical Care;
  • Have or be in the process of completing a PhD;
  • Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates must be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.

Expertise requirements include all of the following:1. Proven expertise in transcranial doppler (TCD) monitoring;2. Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS);3. Bispectral index;4. Ultrafast ultrasound in newborns;5.
