In foundation level GNED courses students explore pre-disciplinary themes and subjects and are exposed to a range of academic disciplines while developing key undergraduate intellectual capacities.The Department Earth and Environmental Sciences offers a Bachelor of Science – Major in Geology, Bachelor of Science – Major in Environmental Science, as well as minors in Geology and Geography and a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Spatial Data ScienceAbout the RoleThe Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences invites applications for a limited-term position, at the rank of Assistant Professor, to support the Geology Major programThe successful candidate will demonstrate a primary commitment to scholarly informed undergraduate teaching. The focus for the position will be on teaching existing courses in “hardrock” geology within the Geology Major. The ability to involve/supervise undergraduate students in research is considered an asset. Priority will be given to applicants who can teach at least 8 of the following courses:GEOL 1101 – The Dynamic EarthGEOL 1103 – Earth Through TimeGEOL 1109 – Introduction to GeologyGEOL 2105 – Structural GeologyGEOL 2111 – Crystallography and Optical MineralogyGEOL 3103 – Igneous PetrologyGEOL 3111 – Metamorphic PetrologyGEOL 3113 – GeochemistryGEOL 4300 – Advanced Geological Field MethodsGEOL 4601 – Plate Tectonic RegimesDetails on these courses can be found in the MRU 2025-2026 Academic Calendar (https://catalog.mtroyal.ca/index.php?catoid=36)The successful candidate for this position will hold a PhD in Geology (or be nearing completion) or a closely related field with a strong theoretical foundation in two or more of the following: mineralogy, igneous petrology, metamorphic petrology, structural geology, geochemistry and economic geology. In cases where the doctorate is in a “related field”, it is the candidate’s responsibility to demonstrate sufficient expertise. Academic experience and relevant industry experience will be considered significant assets for the position.New faculty are hired into one of two work patterns. The teaching/ scholarship/ service pattern (TSS) focuses on teaching with the requirement that the faculty member be involved in a research program as well as service to the Mount Royal community.
