Assistant Professor of Spanish and Portuguese with Joint Appointment in Middle East and North African Studies (MENA)

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese, in collaboration with the Middle East and North African Studies (MENA) Program at Tulane University, invites applications for a tenure-line position at the rank of Assistant Professor.

Qualifications

We are seeking a scholar who can teach a variety of literary and cultural topics primarily in Spanish at the intersection of Iberian and Middle East and North African Studies, with a preference for scholars working on periods prior to the twentieth century. Areas and topics may include Al-Andalus; Medieval Spain; morisco, converso, and/or mudéjar communities; and early modern Iberian engagement with Morocco and the Ottoman Empire. Research proficiency in Arabic required; higher levels of Arabic and/or additional skills in other major languages of the region (e.g., Hebrew, Tamazight, colloquial Arabic dialects, etc.) will enhance the candidacy. While we seek scholars trained in literary and historical studies, we welcome interdisciplinary approaches.

This recruitment is part of an expansion phase for both the Department of the Spanish and Portuguese and the MENA Program, as we look to broaden our academic offerings and research capabilities. The School of Liberal Arts has a broad commitment to the global humanities with strengths in Africana Studies, Latin American Studies, Medieval and Early Modern Studies, and Gender and Sexuality Studies. Candidates should have an established record of scholarship and demonstrated excellence in teaching. They must also show a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and exhibit potential or experience in academic program development.

We are particularly interested in candidates whose work complements and enhances our faculty’s areas of focus, contributing to our vision of a dynamic, interdisciplinary, and transnational approach to Iberian and MENA studies. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in active research and participate in departmental and university service. The teaching load for tenure-line faculty is two courses per semester. This position is a joint appointment, with teaching and service divided between the home department of Spanish and Portuguese (75%) and the MENA program (25%). The start date for the position is July 1, 2026.
