The Center for HOPE at the University of Utah and Huntsman Cancer Institute conducts community-engaged research, large pragmatic clinical trials, implementation science, and clinical research that focuses on healthcare system change, behavioral risk factors, chronic and infectious disease prevention, screening and vaccination, healthcare systems, and the use of state of the science mobile health technologies for both assessment and intervention. The center’s expansive portfolio of research projects collects data from various sources, including ecological momentary assessments, electronic health records, population health management tools, global positioning system/geographical information system, on-body sensors/accelerometry, surveys, and text messaging.

The Center seeks an accomplished Senior Statistical Analyst to lead analytical strategies and provide advanced statistical support for research projects. This position involves developing and executing analytic approaches and ensuring high-quality deliverables. The role requires expertise in statistical methods, research design, and data interpretation to guide decision-making and support groundbreaking research.

The successful applicant will be affiliated with the Cancer Biostatistics Shared Resource (CBSR), a Huntsman Cancer Institute shared resource. CBSR is a group of biostatisticians that engage in a wide range of collaborations in basic science, high-dimensional multiomics data analyses, translational research, epidemiology studies, biomarker selection, and clinical trials. Group members interact with other data scientists, bioinformaticians, statisticians, epidemiologists, psychometricians, health economists, survey design researchers, and systematic review experts within the campus.

Responsibilities

1. Direct and execute statistical analysis for large-scale datasets, including pragmatic clinical trials, intensive longitudinal mHealth data, and electronic health records.
2. Consult with investigators on protocol development, study design, analysis plan, sample size/power calculations, and interpretation of study data.
3. Develop and implement advanced modeling techniques such as machine learning, multi-level analysis, and Bayesian methods.
4. Perform data analyst functions that generate knowledge via data mining, visualization or other analytics. Serve as a resource to others performing this work.
5. Reviews data for discrepancies, interacts with data managers, and creates analysis datasets.
6. Conforms to statistical programming and analysis standards and assists in the development of standards, and contributes to process improvement.
7. Lead the creation of best practices, resources and tools that enable new analytical capabilities.
8. Collaborate with researchers to prepare grant proposals and scholarly manuscripts.
9. Lead the preparation of technical reports and assist in the preparation of peer-reviewed publications.
10. Stay abreast of emerging statistical methodologies and recommend their application to enhance research outcomes.
11. Contribute to strategic planning for expanding the analytics team’s capabilities and aligning with organizational objectives.
12. Manage a team of data managers, fostering skill development and ensuring adherence to project timelines

Minimum Qualifications

1. Master’s degree in Biostatistics or a related field, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience)
2. 5–7 years of experience in health outcomes research or a similar field, including experience managing analytics teams.
3. Fluency in statistical programming languages (e.g., R, SAS) and tools for handling large datasets. Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
4. Demonstrated expertise in predictive modeling, experimental design, and data visualization techniques.
5. Strong writing and verbal communication skills, with a proven track record of collaboration or assisting in published research.

Preferences

1. Ph.D. in Biostatistics or a related field.
2. Advanced knowledge in R, SAS, Python, or SQL focused on tasks of data import, cleaning, analytic modeling, and writing functions/macros.
3. Expert knowledge of both analysis and dataset programming
4. Experience processing, visualizing, or analyzing GIS data.
