Job Description

Responsible for assisting faculty, instructors with various needs during labs and help students during open labs. Provides technical and administrative assistance to laboratory staff and students by maintaining equipment and supplies, preparing materials. Additional duties may include support of science activities and day-to-day functions. 

Duties:

  • Maintains a variety of laboratory equipment by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, performing preventive maintenance and calling for repairs.
  • Maintains glassware and other equipment by picking up, cleaning, washing, sterilizing, and distributing.
  • Maintains lab and common areas, equipment and instruments in a clean, organized, and safe condition including daily and end of semester cleaning
  • Performs daily inspections of specimens
  • Performs dissection and maintenance of specimens
  • Collects, sorts, and delivers laundry.
  • Prepares sets up and tear down of stations, equipment, models, specimens, course materials, consumables, and ensures cleanliness of laboratory.
  • Keeps laboratory supplies ready by inventorying stock, placing orders, and verifying receipt this includes labeling, sorting, and storing supplies
  • Develops and schedules for the laboratory staff this includes lab review sessions
  • Assists in the preparation of materials including teaching or research materials.
  • Provides assistance to laboratory staff and students this includes monitoring students in open lab sessions.
  • Provides administrative assistance to laboratory staff and students by answering phones, running miscellaneous errands, maintaining daily logs and equipment record information.
  • Maintain a safe working environment in the labs with appropriate collection and disposal of biological specimens
  • Reports hazards to management, Department Head, or Lead Instructor
  • Completes all mandatory training.
  • Record and maintain work performed in labs including, but not limited to, activities performed on cadavers.
  • May also be required to prepare for experiments and processing biological samples
  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.

This is a grant funded position; funding is through a multiyear grant with funding each year conditional upon availability of funds and progress. OUHSC employees appointed to positions funded in part or in whole by a grant are expected to use all earned paid leave during the specified period of their appointment. The maximum amount of accrued but unused leave that will be paid out at the termination of employment is 40 hours. Salary is determined by amount of funding available in the grant budget and in alignment with institutional equity.

Job Requirements

Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in Biological Science, Health Sciences, or related discipline

Skills:

  • Ability to pay attention to detail as well as organization skills
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Knowledge of laboratory practices and procedures and willing to review anatomy materials
  • Ability to record and maintain reports and details logs on task performed
  • Knowledge of cleaning and sterilization best practices
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to safely operate and utilize dissection instruments, including sharp objects such as scalpels and power tools
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty and students
  • Ability to handle and clean laboratory equipment and glassware

  • May use acid or autoclave equipment.
