Job Description:

Your responsibilities

As Health, Safety and Environment Officer, you will join the CERN Experimental Physics (EP) Department and ATLAS, one of the four large experiments exploiting the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The EP Department carries out basic research in the field of experimental and theoretical particle physics. It aims at providing a stimulating scientific atmosphere and remains an important reference centre for the European physics community. It contributes to the education and training of young scientists.

You will be part of the ATLAS technical coordination team, under the supervision of the Group Leader in Matters of Safety (LEXGLIMOS). The technical coordination team has the responsibility to ensure the operation and maintenance of the ATLAS detector and its infrastructure. The safety of the experiment is one of the team”s core responsibilities.

As a Health, Safety, Environment Officer in the ATLAS technical coordination team, you will participate in the day-to-day safety management.

You will:

• Perform risk assessments for activities in the ATLAS premises.
• Write reports, define actions, and ensure follow-up.
• Update safety procedures and documentation.
• Analyse safety incidents and follow-up on action plans.
• Provide safety training for CERN collaborators.
• Ensure maintenance of safety equipment.
• Organise evacuation exercises and follow safety training courses (e.g., First-aid, Emergency Guide, Scaffolding controller).

During Long Shutdown 3, starting in July 2026, when ATLAS will host many upgrades and activities, you will:

• Lead safety tours: perform regular tours underground and at surface buildings, communicate with on-site workers, define and follow-up on actions.
• Attend work preparation and safety visits before the start of work.
• Perform shifts in the ATLAS control room.
• Accompany VIP and press visits underground.

Eligibility criteria:

• You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
• By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Health, Safety and Environment (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor”s or Master”s degree.
• You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
• Applicants without University degree are not eligible.
• Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.

Additional Information:

Job closing date: 24.09.2025 at 23:59 CEST.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week

Target start date: 01-November-2025

This position involves:

• Work in Radiation Areas.
• Interventions in underground installations.
• A valid driving licence.
• Use of certain mobile work equipment or equipment used for lifting loads (lifting equipment, bridge cranes, aerial work platforms, etc.) requiring a driving authorization.
• Exposure to electromagnetic fields under certain exposure conditions.

Given the occupational health risks associated with this position, the selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed.
