Job Summary
The Electrophysiology Specialist (EPS) performs adult diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular and electrophysiology (EP) procedures. This position functions independently as an expert technologist in EP who is a highly competent and clinically skilled member of the Invasive Cardiology Team at Denver Health, that includes registered nurses, cardiovascular technologists, certified cardiovascular specialists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, cardiology fellows and faculty physicians. In addition to assisting the EP physicians with the most complex EP procedures, this position oversees the technical operations required for the performance of routine diagnostics and advanced interventional cardiology & electrophysiology procedures. The EPS performs all EP procedures with proficiency and demonstrates technical expertise, making a significant contribution to the diagnosis and treatment of patients with cardiac arrhythmias. This position must be an expert who is competent in the use of EP monitoring/stimulation systems, intra-cardiac echocardiography, and 3D mapping systems. This EPS possesses expert clinical and technical knowledge which they apply to collect and assess data, in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, to provide therapeutic care for patients and family systematically and continuously. The person must demonstrate a high degree of understanding of the interpretation of cardiac arrhythmias in all Invasive Cardiology and EP procedures. The individual must be competent in proper sterile technique and will assist the physician with implantation of permanent pacemakers, ICDs and BiV-ICDs. The individual must be competent in the operation and troubleshooting skills of EP specialty equipment and x-ray systems.
Essential Functions:

  • This position requires the individual to be flexible in their work schedule including but not limited to extended shifts and on-call per operational needs. Ability to arrive in thirty (30) minutes or less for after-hours STEMI call situations. (20%)
  • Duties for this position include but are not limited to analyzing and deciphering electrophysiologic recordings & intra-cardiac echocardiography. Other duties as assigned. (20%)
  • Intra and post procedure patient assessment, hemodynamic monitoring, patient teaching, and scrubbing roles for invasive procedures performed in the department. (20%)
  • Performs at an expert clinical level and assists the electrophysiologists with the most complex electrophysiology procedures in an adult patient population; including both diagnostic and interventional. (20%)
  • Operates complex electrophysiology specialty equipment including but not limited to; 3D mapping systems, stimulation systems, intracardiac echocardiography and EP monitoring and recording system. Serves as an expert resource and educator to all EP staff, nurses, cardiovascular techs, fellows and physicians as appropriate. Precept and train all EP and Invasive Cardiology staff, including nurses, techs, specialists, and fellows to the scrub role for cardiac implantable device procedures. (20%)

education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Program in a health science (includes, but not limited to, cardiovascular/electrophysiology technology, ultrasound, radiologic technology, or paramedic/EMT) required.

Work experience:

  • 4-6 years cardiovascular and electrophysiology technologist work experience in a dedicated electrophysiology or combined cardiovascular/electrophysiology (Cath/EP) lab required.

Licenses:

  • ACLS-Advanced Cardiac Life Support – AHA – American Heart Association required.
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) – AHA – American Heart Association or American Red Cross required.
  • RCIS-Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist – CCI – Care Coordination Institute required.
  • CEPS-Allied Professional Certified Electrophysiology Specialist – IBHRE – International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners required,

  • RCES – Cardiac Credentialing Institute required.
  • ARRT-Radiologic Technologists – ARRT – American Registry of Radiologic Technologists required,

-OR-

  • Non-ARRT (R) require Fluoroscopy Registration through CHPHE required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated expertise in performing all aspects of recording, scrubbing, and monitoring for Cath/EP lab procedures.
  • Demonstrated expertise related to cardiovascular and electrophysiology theory and technical skills.
  • Ability to effectively teach and precept staff related to cardiovascular and electrophysiology theory and technical skills.
  • Competency with imaging and specialized cardiovascular and electrophysiology equipment within scope of practice
  • Serves as a role model to all personnel by demonstrating a high level of expertise with invasive cardiology and electrophysiology systems, including trouble-shooting skills, effective interactions with patients & staff, leadership ability and professional behavior.
  • Excellent critical thinking and troubleshooting skills.
  • High level of professionalism and accountability.
  • EPIC Skills or other EMR skill required.
  • Proficiency with MS Office, preferred.
  • Ability to work as a team member and independently.
