Course description: Students will assemble a portfolio of communication assignments drawn from their second and third year Civil Engineering courses as a showcase of their ability to meet the graduate attributes for communication. The student will demonstrate competence in discipline specific written, oral, and visual communication through the selection of assignments for the portfolio. Each entry will be framed by a short introduction speaking to the context of the work and its significance in the portfolio. Students whose communication work is not up to standard will be provided with opportunities for revision. The course will be offered on a credit/no credit basis; students who receive no credit must retake the course in year 4. This is a 0.00 weighted course.Posting end date: July 18, 2025Number of Positions (est): Up to Two (2) positionsEstimated TA support: N/AEstimated course enrolment: 120 studentsSchedule: Meeting times between students and instructor must be arranged. In particular, instructors are expected to have time available for mandatory group meetings during the first two weeks of term in September and January.Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2025 to April 30, 2026Hours: up to 70 hrsSalary: CUPE minimum salary rates are: Writing Instructor 1 – $55.46/hr plus 4% vacation pay; Writing Instructor 1 Long Term – $59.62/hr plus 4% vacation pay; Writing Instructor 2 – $59.62/hr plus 6% vacation pay; Writing Instructor 2 Long Term – $61.05/hr plus 6% vacation pay; Writing Instructor 2 (priority) – $61.38/hr plus 6% vacation pay and Writing Instructor 2 (priority) Long Term- $62.82/hr plus 6% vacation pay. Should rates stipulated in the Collective Agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the Collective Agreement shall prevail.Minimum Qualifications: Candidates should have at least a Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline (such as, but not limited to, Communication, English, Engineering, Education, Technology Studies) with strong written and oral communication skills, and a demonstrated commitment to teaching communication and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.Preferred Qualifications: qualifications include a PhD in an appropriate discipline (as above), and TESL or other training/certification in second-language instruction at the university level. Familiarity with engineering communication practices, or other experience in Civil Engineering education and practice is also highly desirable.Description of duties:Writing Instructors will work as Communication Instructors (CIs) and be required to work with students and/or grade assignments, as well as work with the portfolio coordinator and other CIs on curriculum development.
