Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

The British Embassy is seeking to recruit a new Climate and Nature Policy officer on an initial 6-month period and then an open-eded contract modality. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating the British Embassy Colombia work on sustainable management of natural resources, including programming and bilateral collaboration in international settings, and support the Head of Climate and Nature Policy in advancing an overarching nature agenda within the UK-Colombia alliance and cooperation.

The successful candidate will be expected to manage, under supervision of the Head of Nature and Climate Policy, a broad and demanding portfolio to promote biodiversity and ecosystem protection in Colombia, and promote their links to the climate change agenda, fostering bilateral collaboration in key policy developments and international negotiations.

The FCDO also operates an agile workforce. To facilitate this, you may be required to undertake other duties from time to time as we may reasonably require. The role could also change over time. Applicants should be prepared to be flexible but in return you will have the opportunity to develop new skills and undertake a varied and challenging role.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Project management (25%): Manage the biodiversity and ecosystems project portfolio of the UK in Colombia while engaging local and national stakeholders to amplify the impact of the project’s expected results.
  • Strategic Relationship Management (25%): Support engagement with officials in the Colombian government on policy and operational elements to deliver UK global priorities on climate and Nature policy as per the advice of London-based HMG colleagues.
  • Program and project formulation and monitoring (25%): Support London-based HMG colleagues of new potential programming in Colombia related to strategic ecosystems, plastics and pollution, climate and biodiversity.
  • Climate and Nature Policy (10%): Support the Climate and Nature Policy Head in advancing an overarching narrative for Nature within the UK-Colombia alliance, including the identification and promotion of synergies between the UK and Colombia’s policies, as well as relevant programming funded by the UK in Colombia.
  • Administrative and logistic tasks (15%): Support the ECS team in the coordination and implementation of events, workshops and meetings relevant to the fulfilment of the team’s objectives.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field, for instance, Public Policy, Public Administration, International Relations, Environmental Sciences.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience working in a strong, collaborative team environment for an organisation in a relevant field, for example, working for/with national or regional government, international organizations or agencies, preferably on multilateral affairs.
  • Strong understanding of international sustainability, oceans and biodiversity, with relevant experience (at least 5 years).
  • Knowledge or experience on programme/project management and formulation.
  • Good network of contacts with of stakeholders both internally and externally: national and local government, private sector, NGOs.
  • Experience of managing diverse and senior level relationships.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people both orally and in writing; good judgement to inform decisions and provide advice.
  • Sound judgement and ability to determine work priorities, work methods and budget allocations.

Language requirements:

Language: English and Spanish

Level of language required: High level of fluency in both – English between B2 and C2 (under the CEFRL or equivalent).

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Knowledge of financial / budget management principles or previous financial management experience.
  • Master’s Degree in a relevant field.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.

Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list. If during the reserve period of 6 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
