The School of Optometry and Vision Sciences are always looking to appoint a number of Clinical Tutors to support the busy Eye Clinic in delivering high-quality teaching at undergraduate level. Applications will be considered as and when they come in, with the advert remaining open until 30th September 2023.
All qualified optometrists remember their time in university, and the impact that their Tutors made on their technique is amongst the strongest memory they have. Perhaps you have wondered whether you would like to impart some of your wisdom and advice to tomorrow’s optometrists? Perhaps you would like to contribute to shaping tomorrow’s optometrists and prepare them for a life in practice? Under the guidance of mentors within the School, we are offering the opportunity to do just this, in a variety of clinical settings. The role of the Clinical Tutor is varied and includes opportunities to teach in small groups, provide 1:1 support, advance students’ clinical competencies, provide occasional informal pastoral support to final year students, and enhance your own knowledge by being part of a team of supervisors; all of whom have areas of expertise and interest of their own. In the role, you become an integral and vital part of the Undergraduate teaching programme in the School and will support and contribute to the School’s outstanding record of graduate quality.
Applications are invited for supervisors of a variety of undergraduate clinics, including Primary Care, Contact Lenses, Binocular Vision, Low Vision and Special Assessment.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
We will be making a number of contracted appointments with regular hours, working over 22 weeks of the year. Our contracts will be offered on a 2-year and 1-year fixed term basis. We are also seeking applications from qualified Optometrists who would like the opportunity to provide locum cover should ad-hoc staff absences occur. Please state in your application, which type(s) of contract you would consider.
Salary: Clinic Tutor hourly rate is £25.75 – £28.66 per hour. This hourly rate is based on Grade 5 hourly rate of £15.7609 to £18.2552 (£28,762 – £33,314 pro rata per annum) plus 17% pay in lieu of annual leave plus market supplement.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
1. Evidence of the ability to provide a definitive source of expertise in the area of Optometry and to demonstrate continuous specialist development.
2. Experience of providing training or instruction in an optometric environment to practice staff or pre-registration optometrists.
3. Demonstrable ability to plan and prioritise own daily work and forward plan for teaching.
Qualifications
4. A good honours degree in Optometry or equivalent experience.
5. Current registration with the General Optical Council. You will be expected to maintain CET points to ensure continued GOC registration, and to uphold membership of an NHS Health Board (or equivalent) to practice as an Optometrist in the Cardiff University, and/or any associated, patient-facing clinics.
6. Recent / current experience of clinical practice in Optometry.

7. A dependable individual, who is pro-active, adaptable, with excellent teamworking and communication skills, along with a willingness to contribute positively to the teaching of the School. The ability to present complex information clearly and confidently to others using a range of media.
Desirable Criteria
8. A Teaching Qualification.
9. Experience in undertaking administrative duties.
10. MECS/EHEW/WEHE accreditation and/or other relevant professional qualification(s).
11. A postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject.
12. Proven ability to adapt to the changing requirements of the Higher Education community.
