Consultant for NPAP and Ocean Program’s Communications and Social Media

Program Overview

As an archipelagic country, Indonesia continues to struggle with various environmental issues regarding its ocean, due to unsustainable development, such as marine and coastal pollution, climate change, and habitat destruction. Increasing demand for resources, technological advances, overfishing, along with inadequate stewardship and law enforcement, are also contributing to the ocean’s decline.

 

Indonesia envisions that in 2045 the country will be able to transform its economy from a natural resource-dependent economy to a modern, competitive manufacturing- and service-based economy with high value-added to secure prosperity and social justice for all Indonesians. This transformation will capitalize on the country’s maritime strengths by incorporating better ocean resource management to leverage the blue economy development for increasing environmental. sustainability as well as building competitive, innovative, and sustainable maritime sectors. A sustainable blue economy is given a central part in this shift of paradigm and geopolitical role. Indonesia will be known globally as a champion for conservation, restoration, and sustainable management of its seas, having been able to tackle the many environmental issues affecting its ocean and seas, such as marine and coastal pollution, climate change, IUU, overfishing, and habitat destruction, among others.

 

WRI Indonesia hosted the secretariat of Indonesia’s National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP), as part of the Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) which initiated by the World Economic Forum (WEF), as a bold neutral platform responsible for coordinating and facilitating the public-private partnerships working to free the world from plastic waste and pollution. The initiative aims to tackle one of the most difficult and pressing challenges facing our global commons – plastics pollution – in particular the plastic pollution of rivers, deltas, and the ocean. The Government of Indonesia has made significant step by committing to reduce plastics pollution to the ocean by 70% by 2025. GPAP is supporting Indonesia to reduce plastic pollution to the ocean through National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP). The partnership brings together top leaders from government, private sectors, and civil society organizations to contribute to achieving national ocean plastic reduction target.

 

Job Highlight

The Communications and Social Media Consultant will work under direct supervision of Plastic Waste and Ocean Manager to support WRI’s effort of reducing marine pollution as well as promoting sustainable ocean by executing the Secretariat of National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP) and Ocean program’s communications strategies. The responsibilities include development of communications products, co-organizing events, and managing multiple communications channels (such as website, blog, publications, media relations, and events). The position holder is expected to proactively collaborate with the NPAP Secretariat, WRI Indonesia Ocean program’s and Communications team, and GPAP team at the World Economic Forum.

 

This position will be based in Jakarta with office-flex working arrangement and travel requirement as needed. What You Will Do

• Implement communications strategies related to NPAP and Ocean Programs. The implementation of communication strategies comprises of but is not limited to communications materials development, events management, media engagement, video development, writing, and social media engagement.
• Develop monthly content planning and lead the implementation by working collaboratively with other related personnel and/or vendor.
• Develop and maintain media partnership including tracking and documenting media mention related to the project
• Coordinate with the Communications Manager the Oceans team to support and manage communications strategies for reports, events, conferences, and news opportunities including media content
• Develop ideas, write, and edit a variety of internal and external materials, such as blog posts, media materials, newsletters, op-eds, website content, and more related to marine pollution and sustainable ocean.
• Engage with third-party vendors and consultants.

 

What You Will Need

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, environment, ocean, or other relevant fields;
• Minimum 3 years of professional experience in communications, journalisim, or public relations field related to environment or ocean issue;
• Social media savvy, experienced in developing and implementing a social media strategy that are useful, valuable, and relevant to the project and its audiences;
• Articulate and experienced writer for environment-related articles and op-eds for media
• Proficient in managing social media, particularly Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn
• Business proficiency in both Bahasa Indonesia and English, with a strong writting and speaking communications
• Ability to communicate effectively with various type of audience and/or stakeholder such as government officials, private entities, and community;
• Having a visual skills, such as photography, graphic design, and Adobe Photoshop are desirable;
• Adaptable to rapidly changing priorities and able to manage multiple deadlines while still maintaining to deliver high-quality work products;
• Ability and willingness to travel as assigned
• Legally able to work in Indonesia;

Preferred Qualifications:

• Strong interest and experience in ocean, environmental, or sustainability issues in Indonesia
• Background in media companies, international organizations, non profit organizations, or consulting firms
• Experience collaborating with reporters or media representatives

Deliverables

1. Design and implement monthly communication plan for plastic pollution and ocean programs.
2. Creation of at least two blog posts or Op-Eds focused on plastic pollution and ocean.
3. Development of at least 18 social media posts throughout the contract period.
4. Produce press releases for external events and, when necessary, supervision and organization of press conferences, press briefings or other press engagements.
5. Co-authorship on WRI Indonesia knowledge products related to plastic pollution and ocean initiatives, together with Oceans as well as Research, Data and Integrity (RDI) teams.
6. Co-develop strategic programmatic deck in collaboration with program and creative teams.
7. Communication material produced throughout the contract period are properly stored within the knowledge management system.Established at least 2 partnerships with environmental media outlets.
8. Regular updates to the WRI Indonesia website on plastic pollution and ocean-related content.
9. Contribute to the development of donor report highlighting communications efforts and their impact.

 

Terms of Payment

Daily rate-based consultant with maximum of 120 (one hundred and twenty) working days for the whole contract period or 20 (twenty) working days per month on average.
