The Consultant Team works from a group job plan. Each consultant will agree an individualisation of the group job plan with the service Clinical Leads/Directors and Clinical Care Group Director annually, on behalf of the Chief Executive.The department supports individually designed job plans that fulfil the clinical responsibilities while allowing for each consultant to develop and enhance academic and other professional interests both within and external to the trust.The post holder will undertake clinical and non-clinical duties in the adult emergency departmentAll consultants will assume responsibility both singly and corporately for the management of junior medical staff. They are also expected to concern themselves with the professional development, both clinical and personal of their trainees. Consultants must be aware of Trust polices & targets and provide a role model in achieving these corporate objectives.Main duties of the jobClinical

  • Primary Clinical Care: Undertake direct clinical care of undifferentiated patients presenting to the Emergency Departments.
  • Team Leader: Act as Team leader co-ordinating the acute resuscitation or patients presenting to the resuscitation room with major trauma, cardiac arrest and major medical emergencies.
  • Area Led: Manage clinical areas of the department over-seeing the management of all patients in that area and supporting the medical and nursing team members working in that area.
  • Every Consultant will work in all areas of the department including RAFTing, Resus, Majors and CDU/SDEC.
  • Emergency Physician in Charge: Working in collaboration with the Nurse in charge to ensure the proper running of the Emergency Department, ensure high standards of clinical care, patient safety and patient experience are maintained throughout the department. Ensure patient care is delivered in line with National Key Performance Indicators for Emergency Care.

Non-Clinical

  • The development of quality improvement schemes, risk management and clinical audit
  • Planning and delivering the provision of the service. This will include planning how work will be organised.
  • The recruitment of junior medical staff and such other staff as appropriate for the department.
  • The selection of equipment for the department, ensuring appropriate standards for its monitoring and maintenance.
  • Training of nursing, ancillary and junior medical staff.

Job responsibilitiesGroup Job PlanThe department plans to move to an annualised, self-rostered job plan. In the meantime, the below descriptions are provided for indicative purposes.Excluding periods of leave, on average each consultant will deliver the equivalent of:Typical Week without Nights

  • 2 Day Clinical Shifts (finishing before 7pm)
  • 1 Late Clinical Shift (finishing after 7pm, current late shift finish is 22:00)
  • 1 Day of SPA

Shifts may be split to combine a period of SPA associated with a period of DCCThe ED at QH has 24/7 resident consultant cover. Consultants are encouraged to deliver night shifts, but this is not mandatory. Night shifts are self-rostered and will take up 5.33 PA per shift. Currently night shifts start at 20h00 up to 08h30 the following morning. For the new job planning cycle we are planning to reduce the night shifts to 10 hours by starting the shifts at 22h00.Night shifts attract a locally agreed uplift to the standard contractual PA re-numeration such that between 00:00 and 07:00 re-numeration is at 2 hours per PA. The Trust reserves the right to review this local agreement at any time following an appropriate notification period.Night shifts are prospectively covered.The requirement to provide night shift cover is automatically reviewed when a consultant reaches 50 years of age. Qualifications
Essential

  • Full GMC registration
  • FRCEM or equivalent
  • ATLS, ALS, APLS Provider

Desirable

  • Ability to provide high quality emergency care to undifferentiated patients
  • Ability to provide advanced airway management including intubation.
  • Demonstrate the ability to anticipate problems, analyse issues, suggest alternative solutions, and make decisions.
