We are recruiting for a consultant in Intensive Care and Acute Medicine. This is a whole-time post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.Applicants are required to hold Membership of an appropriate Royal College and have full UK or equivalent qualifications.Applicants must be eligible for full registration with the GMC at the time of appointment and have entry on the GMC Specialist Register via one of the following: * Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). (The proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview)

  • Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR). (CESR candidates must have written GMC confirmation upon successful application)

The interviews will take place on 11th February, 2025The Job Description has been approved by RCOA and is ‘RCP approval pending.’Main duties of the jobThe critical care unit is amongst the longest established critical care units in the UK. The clinical team is led by a multidisciplinary consultant body comprising of ten Consultants in Critical Care, all of whom have second specialty interests in either Anaesthesia or Research.The vast majority of admissions (approximately 800/year) are emergency cases. There is a wide range of general medical, surgical, urological, ENT and orthopaedic/trauma cases. Whiston hospital hosts the regional burns and plastic surgery centre and offers excellent experience in the management of the critically ill burns patient.The Acute Medicine Unit comprises of a 48 beds admission area with a stabilisation and close observation area. There is a dedicated 16 bed Assessment Unit for GP referrals with triage and reception areas and eight consultation rooms for clinical assessments.This is a substantive 10 PA post, with a job plan in Intensive Care & Acute Medicine as follows.Critical Care = 5 PAAcute Medicine = 2.5 PASPA = 2.5 SPAWeekday working: Critical care cover is provided using a ‘hot week’ style rota, with a 1 in 12 hot week frequency. Twice daily ward rounds daily are expected, with normally non-resident overnight cover.Weekend on calls: Saturdays and Sundays are typically worked as two paired long days and two paired nights at different points in the rota. Qualifications
Essential

  • Full GMC registration and on Specialist Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent at time of interview CESR candidates must have written GMC confirmation of successful application
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • MRCP / FRCA or equivalent medical qualification
  • FFICM or equivalent medical qualification
  • SCE in Acute Medicine

Desirable

  • MD/PHD or equivalent medical qualification
  • DICM, EDIC or equivalent diploma in Intensive Care Medicine
  • Formal qualification in medical education
  • ALS / ATLS / APLS
  • BSE accreditation for echocardiography
  • FICE accreditation (or other focussed cardiac ultrasound qualification)

Knowledge and Experience
Essential

  • Advanced or stage 3 training/fellowship in ICM or equivalent experience
  • Clear evidence of an interest in and a commitment to intensive care medicine

  • Experience in medical education

  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the care of critically ill patients
  • Percutaneous tracheostomy and bronchoscopy skills
