Applications are invited for the post of part time (6PA) substantive Consultant Ophthalmologist with interest Medical Glaucoma at Epsom & St Helier NHS Trust.
The Ophthalmology Department at Epsom and St Helier has a well established and highly performing team treating a broad range of Ophthalmology conditions. The successful applicant will join a team of Consultants, Specialist and Specialty Doctors, Fellows, Trainees, specialist nurses, optometrists, orthoptists, HCAs, technicians and a dedicated admin team including a diabetic failsafe officer and an injection service failsafe officer. The post holder will be required to work across both sites and the role may change depending on service needs.

Main duties of the job
This post is for a part time Substantive Consultant Ophthalmologist with special interest in medical Glaucoma. The post holder will work alongside the Glaucoma clinical lead Mr Chris Panos and the wider glaucoma team.
The Glaucoma team is a multidisciplinary award winning team (including the Bayer Award in 2017). The clinical team is supported by specialist nurses, orthoptists, HCAs, technicians and a dedicated administrative team including a failsafe officer.
The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis and laser management of patients attending glaucoma clinics and the Acute Eye Service. They will support the existing glaucoma consultants in the running of paperless virtual clinics.

Person specification
Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- Hold a medical qualification or qualification registered with the GMC
- Entry onto the Specialist Register for GMC or be within six months of obtaining CCT/CCST or equivalent
- Appropriate higher medical qualification i.e. FRCOphth or CCST equivalent
- Fellowship training in Medical Glaucoma
- High standard of clinical skill and expertise in Medical Glaucoma management
Desirable criteria
- MD or equivalent higher degree or evidence of relevant research
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Evidence of Glaucoma interest with particular emphasis on experience at a super specialist level
- Experience of working in a busy Acute Eye Casualty Service
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of peer reviewed publications
Management & Admin Experience
Essential criteria
- Audit/Research
- Has attended a recognised management training event or will have such training on completion of CCT/CCST
- Supervision of post graduate trainees
- Personal time management skills
- Clinical Governance
- Ability to organise inpatient and outpatient waiting lists
Desirable criteria
- Familiarity within issues of service organisation and development
Teaching Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
- Ability to teach clinical skills
Desirable criteria
- Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates/post graduates
- Experience of supervising junior doctors
- Experience of teaching Lay groups and other staff groups
- Ability to supervise postgraduate research
