Emily Krous at Robert Half is working with a client in Sacramento looking for an Accounting Manager or Controller.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented Accounting Manager / Controller to lead financial operations for our [non-profit organization / small business]. This role is responsible for financial reporting, budgeting, payroll, and compliance, ensuring the organization’s financial health. The ideal candidate is proficient in QuickBooks, has experience with GAAP, fund accounting (for non-profits) or small business financial management, and understands payroll processing, including union payroll if applicable.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Management & Reporting

• Oversee daily accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, and general ledger maintenance.

• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.

• Manage budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow to support strategic decision-making.

• Ensure accurate tracking of grants, donations, and restricted funds (for non-profits).

• Generate custom financial reports in QuickBooks for management and board meetings.

Compliance & Internal Controls

• Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and internal financial policies.

• Prepare and oversee audit processes (internal and external audits).

• Maintain strong internal controls to safeguard financial assets.

• Oversee tax filings (990s for non-profits, payroll taxes, sales tax, and business filings).

Systems & Process Improvement

• Maintain and optimize QuickBooks Online/Desktop for accurate and efficient financial reporting.

• Implement best practices for financial processes and improve reporting efficiency.

• Ensure accurate data entry and reconciliation within QuickBooks and payroll systems.

  Requirements

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA or CMA preferred).

• 5+ years of accounting/finance experience, preferably in a non-profit or small business.

• Strong knowledge of GAAP, fund accounting (for non-profits), and financial compliance.

• Proficiency in QuickBooks Online or Desktop required.

• Experience in budgeting, cash flow management, and financial reporting.

• Familiarity with payroll processing, including union payroll.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a high level of accuracy.

• Ability to work independently and communicate financial insights effectively.

Preferred Skills:

• Experience with non-profit accounting, including grant tracking and donor reporting.

• Familiarity with financial forecasting tools and automation to streamline processes.
