JOB SUMMARY:
The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.
The Trustee Chair in Chinese Business and Economics provides unmatched thought leadership for the Washington policy community by examining China’s economy and the costs and benefits of its commercial relationship with the United States and the rest of the world. We go beyond the headlines to examine Chinese sectoral trends and industrial policy, the behavior of its companies and financial institutions, trade and supply chains, and the political economy of clean-tech and climate governance. Our analysis is shared with the policy community, business leaders, scholars, and the public through reports and commentaries, interactive digital content, and events.
The Trustee Chair is seeking a highly organized, detail oriented, responsive, and entrepreneurial individual to work on a range of administrative activities in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment at either the rank of Program Coordinator or Program Manager. This individual will be an integral part of the team and will support both the day-to-day operations and substantive goals of the program. The successful candidate will be expected to play a key role in advancing new projects and research with responsibilities for event planning, budget management, publications, communications, scheduling, and other administrative duties.
The successful candidate will be detailed oriented, a team player, possess excellent communication skills, and have a keen interest in and aptitude for China’s economy and US-China relations. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, beginning immediately with an expected start date of March 31, 2025.
The salary range for this position is $55,000-$65,000 based on experience.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential administrative functions may include, but are not limited to the following:
• Provide direct logistical and administrative support to the Program Director, Deputy Director, Research Associate, and other Trustee Chair staff members, including calendar management and travel coordination.
• Coordinate planning and execution for virtual and in-person public events, conferences, dialogues, private roundtables, and other activities. This includes scheduling with external contacts, issuing and tracking invitations, coordinating with the press, drafting runs-of-show, working closely with the CSIS Conferencing and AV staff, assisting with VIP guests, and day-of execution. Some of these events may require travel, including to China.
• Develop, monitor, and review project budgets and annual program budget, including drafting new project budget proposals and preparing for budget reviews. Additional responsibilities include processing regular reimbursements and overseeing vendor payments.
• Oversee the program’s communications portfolio, including public mailings and newsletters, and social media content.
• Assist with the publication process by copyediting short and long-form written works by program research staff and draft promotional summaries of works.
• Liaise with other research programs, administrative offices, departmental leadership at CSIS to achieve program goals and report back to the Director and Deputy Director. Proactively de-conflict programming and research with other programs at CSIS when necessary.
• Assist in the planning and execution of the program’s podcast, China Field Notes with Scott Kennedy.
• Maintain internal program files and information flows, including handling physical documents, inputting and cleaning digital databases, and updating a system of metrics to track program performance.
• Work with the Deputy Director and Research Associate in supervising interns’ day-to-day activities and responsibilities.
• Other tasks as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:
• B.A./B.S. in international relations, economics, political science, history or another related field, and strong academic record with a demonstrated focus on China. M.A./M.S. in a related field or program management a plus.
• For the Program Coordinator role, at least 1-2 years of relevant experience (including internships).
• For the Program Manager role, at least 2-3 years of relevant experience (including internships).
• Excellent verbal, written, and communication skills, with an ability to proactively and effectively present information and respond to questions from other team members and external contacts.
• Strong organizational and time management skills, along with an ability to work well independently and in groups.
• Be capable of managing multiple projects and priorities simultaneously, with an ability to solve problems in a timely and professional manner.
• High degree of personal discretion and robust understanding of cultural sensitivities.
• Be highly motivated, enthusiastic, detail-oriented, organized, and possess a proactive attitude with a willingness to help wherever needed and to work collaboratively with the team.
• Familiarity with using Chinese communication platforms and Chinese professional communication styles. Mandarin Chinese proficiency a plus.
