AARP’s Policy, Research and International Affairs leads the development and communication of AARP’s public policies and, research and insights on the issues that matter to people 50-plus.

AARP’s policy team is looking for a graduate or law school intern to help analyze and develop public policies that form the foundation of AARP’s work to empower people age 50 and older to choose how they live as they age. Working with the Office of Policy Development & Integration (OPDI), you will participate in the policy development process, researching and recommending policies in our three issue areas: economic (budget/taxation, savings/retirement security, employment, and low-income assistance programs); health (Medicare, Medicaid, prescription drugs, long-term services and supports, and caregiving); and consumer (financial services, elder abuse prevention, utilities, livable communities, housing, transportation, and elections/voting). This paid internship has an anticipated start date of June 2025 and will go through the end of the summer.

Responsibilities

• Conduct objective policy analysis and research of major federal, state, and local issues related to issues in the health, economic, and consumer portfolios
• Write concise and well-reasoned memo reports and content for AARP’s online Policy Book
• Gather, organize, and analyze policy input from stakeholders, including staff, volunteers, and members
• Support OPDI colleagues with other tasks, such as outreach and remote and in-person events
• Participate in team meetings and strategy discussions

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college or university as a graduate or professional student (preferably in public policy or another social science program) and remain academically enrolled throughout the internship
• Must have experience in public policy or legal analysis and strong writing abilities, including the ability to summarize complex topics succinctly and clearly
• Must be organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines
• Candidates must have excellent policy analysis, research, and writing skills, as well as attention to detail and the ability to work on multiple projects at once under staff supervision

Hybrid Work Environment

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as remote workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work can only be done within the United States and its territories.

Compensation and Benefits

The hourly range is $18 for undergraduates, $21 for graduate students, and $28 for Ph.D. candidates. Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.
