Duties and Responsibilities
The internship is located in the Campaigns and Country Operations Division of the Department of Global Communications, Sustainable Development and Climate Section. The Sustainable Development and Climate Section has a mandate to promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that guide the UN’s work to boost economic prosperity and social well-being while protecting the environment. The internship is for three (3) months with an opportunity for extension up to six (6) months, depending on the needs of the Division and availability of the candidate. The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days a week (35 hours) in person under the supervision of the Chief of the Section. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background and the internship period. The selected intern may perform some of the following functions, but are not limited to: 1. Tracking, researching and analyzing information on assigned topics, gathering information from diverse sources and helping assess news value and other potential impact; 2. Drafting and compiling a specific type (print, broadcast, social media, etc) of information products for target audiences; 3. Conducting photo and graphic research; designing and preparing multimedia assets by using tools such as the Adobe Creative Suite, and captioning videos and clips; 4. Assisting with the implementation of DGC’s communications campaigns; identifying and proposing information opportunities, activities and approaches while taking into account the topic and target audiences; 5. Assisting with organization of press conferences for communications campaigns on priority development issues; 6. Maintaining and updating media and subscription mailing lists; 7. Media Monitoring.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS PowerPoint, Trello, Canva and MS Teams. Photoshop skills are desirable. Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts in desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is desirable. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
