Description

The Region remains at the forefront of the global fight against polio, as home to the world’s last two endemic countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan. While significant progress has been made, the resurgence of wild poliovirus in both countries in 2024, along with outbreaks of variant poliovirus in Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, and Gaza, underscores the urgent need for intensified efforts. To seize the opportunity to end polio and respond swiftly to ongoing outbreaks, the regional programme must work with renewed urgency across all disciplines—including communication—to ensure that commitments are effectively translated into action.

This response includes, but is not limited to, the timely production of public- and donor-facing communication materials. With an increasing number of digital platforms available to the programme and a growing need to share information on progress being made, challenges being faced and advocacy opportunities, the production of high-quality digital content, including infographics, GIFs, and short social media videos, is an emerging priority, particularly from a donor communications perspective.

To enhance stakeholders’ understanding of WHO’s role in polio eradication in the Eastern Mediterranean Region and to increase the programme’s visibility, the Communications Unit of the WHO polio eradication programme, based in Amman, Jordan, requires additional support in digital communications and digital content production. This role will help strengthen WHO polio programme communications, advocacy, and outreach efforts.
