Job Purpose
The Director, Business and Legal Affairs will provide commercially focused legal and business affairs support to Global Media & Streaming units in the Americas, ensuring timely and practical guidance.
- As a vital, trusted and key advisor, provide accurate, timely, practical and commercially focused business affairs and legal support on matters of strategic, financial and reputational importance to all Global Media & Streaming business units in the Americas.
- Support content sales, distribution and acquisitions for BBC Studios’ branded services in the Americas (inc. BritBox and BBC Select).
- Counsel client groups on a wide variety of related legal matters, including intellectual property rights, fair use analysis, insurance, and online and music issues, while performing other day-to-day business and legal affairs-related tasks as needed.
- Ensure that the highest standards of corporate governance, risk management and compliance with law, policy and regulation are observed at all times.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
- Structure, draft and negotiate complex contracts in relation to the full breadth and depth of the Global Media & Streaming business, in full compliance with BBC Studios policies, procedures, guidelines and risk management.
- Advise content sales, distribution and acquisition teams on content-related matters and support cross-functional collaboration (e.g., sales, finance, operations and marketing teams).
- Build and manage strong relationships as a partner to the business, including with BBC Studios’ offices in other overseas regions and territories as required.
- Deliver timely and high-quality legal advice (evaluating facts and applying knowledge while recognizing the strategic focus of the business) in a practical and commercially focused way – reducing risk, resolving issues and maximizing the opportunity for BBC Studios to deliver on its goals.
- Assist in devising and delivering training on relevant topics, both within BLA and to the business.
- Work with the Americas and global BLA teams to help create and implement a coordinated approach to dealmaking and agreements across multiple business units and territories to ensure that the business and legal affairs needs of BBC Studios are being met.

- Knowledge of international media environments, including e.g. a detailed understanding of contract, commercial and intellectual property law.
- Understanding of industry standards for content distribution agreements, including digital rights.
- Commercial acumen.
- Strong analytic, negotiation and legal drafting skills.
- Experience in managing multiple matters and diverse, fast-paced workstreams, accommodating tight deadlines while working in a fast-paced environment (flexibility or long hours if and when necessary).
- Ability to efficiently identify risk and provide practical solutions to legal issues – communicating the same effectively to non-lawyers at all levels of the organization.
- Ability to work proactively and diligently, with a solution-oriented approach to business affairs and legal matters.
- Ability to maintain a positive and professional manner, even under pressure.
- Ability to use discretion with confidential information.
- Ability to work independently but also collaboratively as a team player.
Professional Experience
- JD degree and member of NY and/or CA bar.
- 9+ years of relevant business or legal affairs transactional experience, ideally gained at a television or multimedia distribution company, network and/or entertainment law firm.
- Understanding of the structures and systems within which broadcasters, producers and distributors (whether traditional or non-traditional e.g., digital) operate.
- Experience and/or understanding of promoting risk management, compliance and sound corporate governance.
- Experience with digital consumer subscription services, technology contracts, social media contracts and/or data privacy are a plus.

Compensation
The anticipated annual base salary for this position is $190,000 to $215,000. This range does not include bonus compensation or other benefits that an individual may be eligible for. The actual base salary offered depends on the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and geographic location of the position.
This range is not inclusive of a competitive bonus, flexible, hybrid working schedule & benefits including but not limited to: 100% BBCS covered medical & dental insurance, vision, & 401k match.
