This position manages over 140 coders that provide professional coding for the clinical activities of University Physicians. This position works with Coding Managers and Supervisors to review and monitor processes and procedures and adapt to an ever-changing coding environment. Work with Compliance to establish policies and procedures for coding staff. Monitor integrated coding systems for performance and efficiency and trouble shoot issues to maximize system efficiency. Ensure coding teams are working efficiently. Create and maintain training materials for provider and coding staff. Must be familiar with all applicable federal and state laws and regulations regarding professional coding. Leader in the revenue cycle processes to meet defined goals and objectives. 

  • Mentors departmental managers and supervisors to properly follow personnel policies and procedures in conjunction with hiring, training, discipline, discharge and evaluation coding department staff. 
  • Monitors workflow, schedules and staffing to ensure effective use of personnel.
  • Monitors departmental performance in relation to established goals and standards; as well as development, implementation, and adherence of new policies and procedures as indicated to continually improve operational efficiencies and quality of the services provided. 
  • Plans, implements, and monitors Process Improvement initiatives while meeting organizational as well as departmental missions and goals.
  • Works collaboratively to solve problems, to improve processes, and to integrate services within the department and with other School of Medicine and Hospital Departments.
  • Identifies issues and problems or areas requiring improvement or resolutions.
  • Develops, implements, and assures adherence of new policies and procedures as needed to meet regulatory requirements for coding compliance.
  • Develops, monitors, and manages the budget and use of resources effectively to provide high quality, cost effective services.
  • Keeps Senior Director of Revenue Cycle Operations apprised of issues, problems or challenges facing the coding department and works effectively with other departments and or management staff to resolve. 
  • Complies with all University Physicians Policies.

Position is eligible for the University Physicians work from home program with expectations of on-site meetings, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in health information management or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities can be acquired.

Five (5) years of supervisory experience in the medical record field.

Preferred Qualifications

Credentials: CPC, CPMA, CPCO

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $99,174 – $161,720

Grade: PAT 13
