Job Summary:

The Health Information Director is responsible for all functions of the Health Information Department. Responsible for the ICD10 implementation process. Responsible for the HIM body of knowledge, such as diagnostic coding, reimbursement processes, release of information, privacy and security of health information, etc. Prepares and initiates in-service programs for the department. Ensures that HIPAA complaints are reported and investigated appropriately and that adequate corrective action is taken to mitigate any breach of the organization’s HIPAA privacy policies and procedures. Monitors changes in legislation and accreditation standards that affect health information management. Ensures compliance with state and JCAHO regulations.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities / Essential Functions

1. Manages daily operations in the Health Information Department.

2. Be engaged in the organizations ICD10 implementation team and continually assess the organizations state of readiness. 

3. Works with Corporate Compliance, Legal, Quality and other key departments and committees to ensure the organization has and maintains appropriate privacy and confidentiality consent, authorization forms, and information notices and materials reflecting current organization and legal practices and requirements.

4. Experience with electronic health record, health information systems and healthcare applications.

5. Expertise in health information management, best practices, processes and procedures. Knowledge of medical terminology, classification systems and vocabularies.

6. Maintains a cost conscious attitude to time usage, materials and supplies.

7. Demonstrates creativity, intelligence and discretion in planning, organizing and coordinating of departmental functions.

8. Develops HIM policies and procedures in coordination with organization management, administration and technical development staff.

9. Actively participates in various committees such as Documentation Improvement Committee, Medical Record Review, etc.

Qualifications

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Experience Required:

Education: RHIT and/or RHIA

Experience: 5 years experience in a leadership role in a hospital medical record department.
