JOB DESCRIPTION

FULL TIME POSITION: District Health Education Specialist (Health Educator)

RESPONSIBLE TO: Executive Director for Community Engagement and Student & Family Support Student & Family Support Coordinator

JOB GOAL: To educate, facilitate, advocate, and collaborate with schools in order to help students achieve healthy lifestyles and reduce risks of health disparities, teen pregnancy, drug use, and chronic disease.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in health education and one year of experience in public health education or a related field; or graduation from a four-year college or university and two years of experience in public health education.

DUTIES: The District Health Education Specialist will help to establish and/or model best practices in the following areas:

• Provide direct support to school-based student support teams (e.g. school counselors, school nurses, & school social workers), Health & PE teachers, and other school personnel through age appropriate health education resources and/or activities, including but not limited to:
• Development of classroom presentations.
• Leading or facilitating school assemblies
• Individual or small group education as applicable
• Maintaining an up-to-date resource site with available audiovisual presentation, literature, statistics, etc.
• Maintaining up-to-date resources alongside North Carolina Health Education Standards, including the puberty/reproductive health curriculum.
• Build partnerships and/or utilize community resources which can enhance and complement health education and school wellness efforts.
• Serve as a resource speaker on varying health topics including, but not limited to:
• Mental & emotional health
• Drug & Alcohol use prevention
• Vaping and/or tobacco prevention
• Nutrition
• Dental Health
• Environmental Health
• Family Living
• Consumer Health
• Disease Control
• Growth & Development
• First Aid & Emergency care
• Bicycle Safety
• Provide approved and age-appropriate reproductive health education in the classroom upon request to grades 7-9, and can lead presentations on the following topics:
• Abstinence
• Methods of birth control
• Prevention of sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS.
• Support district professional development efforts for school-based student support teams, Health & PE teachers, and other district personnel as applicable.
• Serve as a member of the School Health Advisory Committee
• Directly support the WCPS Title IV Enrichment Facilitator in the completion of the following activities:
• Annual Healthy Active Children Report
• Triennial review of Wayne County BOE Policy 4112: Local Wellness.
• Development and/or management of a centralized data-base which can generate reports for high school data manager to document in PowerSchool those students who have successfully completed the CPR instruction required for graduation
• Collect and report data as needed to support local health education and wellness efforts.
• All other related duties as assigned.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 10 Months

SALARY:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: The District Lead Health Education Specialist must be able to:

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with school-based student support teams, health & PE teachers, school administrators, and district-level personnel.
• Work independently, plan, coordinate, meet deadlines, and manage multiple activities and schedules for the district health educator program.
• Display considerable knowledge of health education principles, practices, and theories.
• Be knowledgeable of educational methods and techniques.
• Effectively communicate in writing, orally and in presentations.
• Comply with confidentiality requirements in local, state and federal policies and statutes.
