Duties and Responsibilities
The Department of Operational Support (DOS) was established to provide end-to-end operational support, advisory services and other solutions to operating entities across the Secretariat, including departments, offices away from headquarters, peace operations, and regional commissions. The Human Resources Services Division (HRSD) provides dedicated services in support of human resources requirements of client entities, from process development through service delivery. This internship is within the Operational Support and Advisory Service (OSAS) team in the Human Resources Services Division (HRSD), Office of Support Operations (OSO), Department of Operational Support (DOS). The Intern reports to the Service Chief, Operational Support and Advisory Service and is a part of the front office of the service. The Internship is for a minimum of three months with a preferred start date after 1 April 2025 and is renewable for up to 3 additional (a maximum of total six) months. The internship is designed to be full-time and in-person but may be adjusted based on the availability of the successful candidate. The Intern works five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member. OSAS currently offers flexible working arrangements with 2 days of telecommuting per week. Interns may avail of flexible working arrangements in the same manner as other personnel. Requests to conduct the internship part-time may be accommodated. The intern works as a full member of our team, pursuing project assignments that are designed to make a significant impact on our work, and has opportunities to learn about the United Nations overall. The internship will focus on the following areas that will contribute to our current main projects: i. Drafting presentations and briefing material on general HR issues for our global clients. ii. Drafting presentations and briefing materials explaining OSAS services to clients and member states. iii. Supporting the OSAS Service Chief with talking points, briefing notes iv. Attending meetings and preparing agendas, meeting notes and action items – tracking action items and monitoring delivery v. Supporting the OSAS Service Chief on special projects Reporting to: Service Chief (OSAS)
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). • Be computer literate in standard software applications, especially Sharepoint and MS Office based applications (Word, Excel and Powerpoint); • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. • We are open to a broad range of educational backgrounds. Candidates with project/ research or volunteer-based experience in an international setting with relevant coursework in International Relations, Business Administration, Management, Strategic Communications and Design, Project Management, Law or human resources management will be suitable for this opportunity. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study or project/ research or volunteer-based experience that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for will be preferred. Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Visa and Work Authorization Mandatory Requirements: For internships in the United States of America, persons who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or on another non-immigrant (such as F1 or J1 visa) status, will be required to obtain a G4 visa. The selected person will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and approved employment authorization (CPT/OPT/AT), allowing them to undertake the internship.

Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
