Protection Officer-CBP/PSS

 

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC), one of the world’s leading NGOs, with a focus on responding to displacement, have been registered in Sudan since 2004, delivering life-saving programming in protection, emergency response, shelter, food security and livelihoods, disaster risk reduction, camp management, and humanitarian mine action. DRC has implemented projects in Central Darfur, South Kordofan, Gedaref, Port Sudan, and White Nile. Sudan hosts one of the largest displaced populations in Africa, with over 3.7 million internally displaced people and over 1.1 million refugees from South Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Central African Republic, Chad, Yemen and Syria. Against a background of political crisis, Sudan faces economic and social turmoil, with sharp increases in food and energy costs, further exacerbated by disease outbreaks and ongoing conflict.

POSITION PROFILE

The Protection Officer (CBP/PSS) is responsible for implementing community-based protection and psychosocial support activities in Um Dukhun. The role includes supervising and mentoring Protection Assistants, community focal points, and volunteers, while ensuring a participatory, inclusive, and protection-centered approach. The position also contributes to strengthening community resilience, supporting individuals with specific needs, and ensuring effective referrals to services.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Psychosocial Support (PSS)

• Provide direct psychosocial support to individuals, families, and groups in need, ensuring a safe, supportive, and confidential environment.
• Facilitate structured group-based PSS activities to strengthen community resilience, coping mechanisms, and social networks.
• Identify individuals with specific needs and ensure timely, appropriate, and safe referrals to internal and external services.
• Conduct regular follow-up with persons of concern to monitor well-being and access to services.
• Contribute to the design and implementation of PSS tools, activities, and approaches adapted to the context of Um Dukhun.

2. Community-Based Protection (CBP) Activities

• Facilitate community consultations, focus group discussions (FGDs), and awareness sessions to identify protection risks and strengthen community-led solutions.
• Support the establishment and strengthening of community protection structures and focal points, ensuring meaningful participation of women, men, youth, and persons with disabilities.
• Work with communities to develop, implement, and monitor protection action plans.
• Promote safe and inclusive participation of community members in humanitarian programming and decision-making.
• Identify protection risks and gaps and provide practical recommendations to improve access to services and community safety.

3. Reporting and Information Management

• Provide weekly updates and monthly reports on CBP and PSS activities, including key achievements, challenges, and recommendations.
• Maintain accurate and confidential records of activities, referrals, and case follow-ups, in line with organizational standards and data protection protocols.
• Document lessons learned and best practices to improve ongoing and future programming.

4. Capacity Building and Supervision

• Supervise and mentor Protection Assistants, community focal points, and volunteers involved in CBP and PSS activities.
• Conduct regular capacity-building sessions, on-the-job coaching, and awareness sessions to strengthen the skills of field staff and community focal points.
• Carry out periodic capacity assessments of community structures to ensure effective application of protection principles.

5. Coordination and Representation

• Build and maintain strong relationships with community leaders, local authorities, and other humanitarian actors in Um Dukhun.
• Coordinate with other DRC sectors (Protection, Economic Recovery, Shelter, etc.) to ensure integrated and holistic support to persons of concern.
• Participate in field-level protection coordination meetings, including PSN meetings, to strengthen referral pathways and collective response.
• Support joint initiatives with partners to enhance service delivery and protection outcomes.

Experience and technical competencies:

• At least 3-4 years of experience in international organizations and humanitarian settings, specifically working on Protection programming, including PSS and case management.

• Experience in providing trainings / facilitating sessions on protection topics.

• Demonstrated experience in working on Protection Case Management and PSS service provision

• Ability to maintain confidentiality, respect, non-discrimination and safety of individuals at all times.

• Computer Literacy (Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint).

• Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills, creativity and flexibility.

• Flexible and able to handle pressure well.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS 

• Bachelor/ Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology or another related field.

LANGUAGES   

• Fluency in written and spoken Arabic

• Working ability in English is an advantage.
