DYSLEXIA ASSESSOR

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Dyslexia Assessor

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Nonexempt

FUNDING SOURCE: Local

REPORTS TO: Dyslexia Coordinator

PAY GRADE: Teacher Salary Schedule (198 Days)

DEPARTMENT: Specialized Learning Services

DATE REVISED: June 2020

This position is eligible for a Chapter 21 contract.

PRIMARY PURPOSE: Assess students referred for dyslexia services; maintain testing records for students according to state laws and local policies; and, collaborate with teachers, parents, and other school personnel in order to plan and implement individual programs that promote student learning.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum education: Bachelor’s Degree

Valid Texas Teacher’s Certificate

Master’s Degree (preferred)

Special Knowledge/Skills

  • Proficient skills in reading, speaking, and writing
  • Bilingual – Spanish/English (preferred)
  • Knowledge of dyslexia research, scientific research-based interventions for reading, and evidence-based best practices for teaching reading grades K-12
  • In depth knowledge of informal and formal reading assessment used to identify characteristics of dyslexia
  • Knowledge of Section 504 and the Dyslexia Process
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to travel throughout the district

Minimum experience:

  • Successful student teaching experience or approved internship
  • Three (3) years successful teacher of reading (preferred)

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Program Management:

  • Administer assessments to students referred for dyslexia assessment
  • Provide accurate records of the assessment results
  • Communicate with campus personnel regarding assessment results
  • Arrange appointments for testing and maintain logs
  • Serve as a translator, if needed
  • Maintain confidentiality of all information obtained at campuses
  • Maintain inventory of testing materials and supplies
  • Maintain proper security of testing materials at all times

Communication:

  • Utilize effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  • Establish and maintain professional communication with parents, students, and district personnel; ensure that all interactions are supportive, courteous, and respectful.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by TEA and the district; file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.

Professional Growth and Development:

  • Participate in professional development activities aligned with district and campus goals, assigned subject content, and the varied needs of students.
  • Demonstrate interest and initiative in professional improvement.
  • Attend various conferences and/or workshops designed specifically for assessors/educators of students with dyslexia

Policy Implementation:

  • Comply with all policies, operating procedures, legal requirements, and verbal and written directives.
  • Comply with the Professional Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Must maintain emotional control and exercise reasoning and problem solving skills while under stress. Must demonstrate ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written). Should be able to interpret procedures and analyze data for decision-making. Frequent in-district and occasional in-state or national travel. Occasional prolonged and irregular hours.

Safety: Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidences immediately to supervisor, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.
