Art Educator

The Flint Institute of Arts is seeking a dynamic and dedicated Art Educator to join our team. This role is vital in delivering high-quality art education through school and community outreach programs, gallery tours and lectures, studio activities, homeschool and afterschool programs.

Responsibilities

Program Development, Instruction and Classroom Management:

  • Collaborate with the Curriculum Coordinator to design age-appropriate lesson plans and educational activities for diverse groups ranging from Pre-K to adults.
  • Teach a variety of art lessons to Pre-K-Adult groups.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive learning environment that encourages creativity and engagement.
  • Use effective teaching strategies to address varied learning needs, including special education adaptations.
  • Assess student progress and tailor instructional approaches to support their development.

Collaboration, Support, Growth:

  • Work with colleagues and external partners to create meaningful educational experiences and special programming.
  • Maintain art studios and manage supplies to ensure an efficient and inspiring creative environment.
  • Assist the Director in planning and delivering educational programs and substitute for colleagues as needed.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current in educational strategies and artistic practices.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA, BS, or BFA) in Art Education, Fine Arts/Design, Education, or Museum Studies from an accredited institution.
  • Proficiency in visual arts and design principles.
  • Previous experience working with children in an educational setting.
  • Knowledge of childhood development, behavior management techniques, and educational theories.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively with colleagues, students, and parents.

Preferred:

  • Michigan K-12 Teaching Certificate (current or past).

Physical Activities required to perform essential functions

  • Driving: Transportation to and from Outreach locations.
  • Sitting/Standing/Walking: Approximately 70% of time is spent standing or moving around work areas. Balance of time (approximately 30%) is spent seated while working at a desk.
  • Speaking/Hearing: Clear diction and acute hearing are necessary for e?ective communication with co-workers, the public, and outside agencies, by telephone and in person.
  • Vision: Corrected vision close to 20/20 is necessary to e?ectively use the computer screens and interpret written information.
  • Lifting/Carrying/Pushing/Pulling: The ability to lift and carry weights up to 20 pounds.
  • Stooping/Kneeling: The ability to stoop and kneel is necessary for accessing supplies and performing inspections.
  • Reading/Handling: Good manual dexterity is necessary for computer keyboard use and for retrieving and working with appropriate paperwork, equipment, and supplies.
