Role overview

The Associated Press is seeking a PM engagement editor to drive how our journalism reaches audiences during one of the most crucial parts of the news day.

This is a role built on speed,judgmentand execution. You willbe responsible formaking fast,high-stakescalls about how AP journalism is presented,prioritizedand distributed across platforms.

At the same time, this is not a passive curation role. You are expected to spot opportunities in real time – stories that deserve more prominence, angles that can be sharpened, coverage that can go further – and work with editors and reporters to elevate them.

Schedule and location

This role is aligned with U.S. evening hours and includes regular evening and weekend shifts.

Employees who are based near an AP office and work standard business days are expected to be in the office on Tuesdays,Wednesdaysand Thursdays.

Responsibilities

You will takean important rolein how AP journalism shows up across platforms during the PM news cycle.

On a typical shift, you may:

Lead theAPNewshomepage during peak evening traffic, making fast decisions on story placement and promotion
Write andoptimizeheadlines for clarity,urgencyand search performance
Program push alerts that cut through and drive readership
Shape how stories are framed and distributed across social platforms
Use audience data to adjust coverage priorities in real time

Beyond execution, you will:

Identifystories thatwarrantgreater visibility or a different approach
Work with reporters and editors to strengthen framing,headlinesor packaging
Surface gaps in coverage or missed opportunities during your shift

Your job is not just to move stories. It’s to make sure the right stories land with the right audiences, at the right moment.

Qualifications

We’relooking for a journalist who combines strong editorial instincts with a deep understanding of digital audiences.

You should:

Have sharp news judgment and thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Be able to make quick calls without sacrificing accuracy or standards
Write clean, compelling headlines under pressure
Understand how audiences engage across homepage, search,socialand alerts
Be comfortable using metrics to inform decisions in real time

You’ll stand out if you:

Havea track recordof making smart calls on big or fast-moving stories
Know when to move quickly and when a story needs another pass
Can influence coverage through collaboration, not authority
Think beyond the first publish and look for ways to extend the life and reach of a story

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
At least one year of experience as an editor,reporteror digital producer
Authorization to work in the United States
Advancedproficiencyin written and spoken English;additionallanguages are a plus

AP is a 24/7 news organization. This role requires flexibility, including evenings and weekends.

This position is covered by The Associated Press’ contract with the News Media Guild, whichprovides foran annual salary for Class A staff of between $53,477 and $85,214 based on location and years of professional experience.Compensation iscontingenton a job candidate’s skills,qualificationsand market location. Employees are eligible toparticipate, according to the terms of the official plan documents, in a 401(k) plan and employer-sponsored health insuranceplan, andare eligible for paid time off and holidaysin accordance withAP policy.
