Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)
The British Embassy Amman has a vacancy for a Finance Assistant, job grade Administrative Assistant (AA), on a fixed term contract until 20 April 2026 to cover a period of maternity leave.
This position is part of the Corporate Services Team (CST) at the British Embassy in Amman. The Finance Assistant plays a key role in supporting the Finance Officer. The role requires maintaining a high level of accuracy and ensuring tasks are completed in a timely manner. In addition to assisting with fluctuating demands, the Finance Assistant is responsible for completing routine financial tasks on a regular basis and providing support to colleagues across the Embassy.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Provide effective administrative support to the Finance Officer as and when required.
- Assist in the preparation of payroll, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
- Manage communications with the Social Security Corporation and reconcile their reports with internal records.
- Send daily bank statements and ensure timely financial updates.
- Maintain an organized and up-to-date accounts filing system, ensuring proper record-keeping practices.
- Support the preparation and updating of monthly reports and spreadsheets and assist in distributing periodic reports (weekly and monthly).
- Prepare journals as required, ensuring compliance with financial procedures.
- Provide cover for the Finance Officer during periods of absence, ensuring continuity of financial operations.
The above list is not exhaustive, and the jobholder will be required to be flexible as specific responsibilities could change in the future, and this would be at the discretion of the line manager. The job description may be reviewed to meet changes in business needs. The jobholder may also take on other ad hoc tasks as required, including participating in the Embassy’s emergency planning and any other response to a crisis.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience
- Previous experience in a similar role.
- Fluency in English, both written and spoken. Able to express ideas and messages clearly and concisely, both orally and in written communication.
- Strong IT skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. Particular emphasis is placed on advanced Excel capabilities, especially in using formulas, lookups, and IF statements for data analysis.
- Proven experience in payroll preparation, ensuring accuracy and compliance with relevant policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated experience in financial reconciliations, including accounts such as social security and bank statements.
- Strong organizational skills and familiarity with effective filing systems, to ensure documents and records are maintained in a structured and accessible manner.
- Demonstrates initiative, adaptability, and the ability to work flexibly to organise and prioritise workloads, organise records, meet deadlines and maintain close attention to detail. Proactive approach to problem solving.
- Strong team player with partnering skills with a diverse range of customers.
- Demonstrates courtesy and consideration in dealing with internal and external stakeholders. Able to show discretion in handling any sensitive matters, with the trust of all involved.
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
- Prior experience in budgeting and financial forecasting.
- A degree in Accounting/Finance
- Possession of relevant professional certifications such as CMA, CIMA, CPA, ACCA, or CFA

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including a non-negotiable gross salary of JOD 958 per month based on 37 hours per week.
Salary will be paid in gross, and you are expected to comply with your tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the local authorities. If exceptionally you are not liable to pay Jordanian tax, you will receive a net salary, which is minus the deduction of an equivalent level of local tax. Further information on this will be provided at interview if necessary.
This role is for a full-time employment on a fixed term contract basis for six months until 20 April 2026. The successful candidate will be subject to a 30-day probationary period. The appointment is subject to satisfactory local and UK security clearances. The selected candidate must have the right to live and work in Jordan.
Normal working hours at the Embassy are Sundays to Wednesdays from 08:00-15:30 and Thursdays from 08:00-15:00. The Embassy operates a flexible working policy that allows staff to work different hours as well as allowing staff to work from home one day a week, based on operational requirements and agreement with the line manager, and in line with FCDO and Embassy policies
