LMU Loyola Law School seeks a dynamic individual to serve as the Director of the Field Placement Department. The LMU Loyola Law School Field Placement Program provides students experiential learning opportunities in judicial chambers, public interest organizations, government agencies, corporate legal departments, and private firms. The Director plays a key role in preparing students for the evolving demands of legal practice, fostering relationships with placement supervisors, and ensuring compliance with ABA standards. The Director of the Field Placement Department will be an Associate Clinical Professor and will serve in a full-time position combining teaching, management, and administrative leadership of the field placement program that operates 12-months a year.
Teaching and Pedagogical Leadership
- Teach and manage field placement courses during the academic year, including summer sessions, covering topics such as professional identity, networking, time management, and implicit bias.
- In addition to overseeing and teaching field placement courses, teach 6 units during the academic year of other courses as coordinated with the LMU Loyola School Associate Dean for Faculty and the Associate Dean for Clinical Programs and Experiential Learning.
- Design and deliver field placement curriculum for orientation programs and seminars focused on subjects related to field placements, such as professionalism, and ethics
- Develop and implement new course offerings, such as advanced field placement courses, focusing on professional identity, well-being, and career planning.
- Train and support adjunct faculty and field supervisors to enhance experiential pedagogy and ensure program quality.
- Assess and monitor student work in field placements, including hour logs, reflections, and other assignments, to provide meaningful feedback and ensure compliance with program requirements.
Program Administration
- Oversee and manage all field placement programs, including judicial, public interest, government, corporate, and private firm placements.
- Maintain and improve data management systems to streamline processes and track student placements.
- Ensure accurate reporting of program data for internal use, ABA compliance, and other institutional requirements.
- Collaborate with faculty committees to evaluate and recommend policies, relating to field placements.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to develop timelines, materials, and policies to guide students through the field placement application process.
- Review, approve, and monitor all student placements, including vetting employers and providing final approval for all field placement grades.
- Coordinate with the Career Development Office (CDO) to promote placement opportunities and provide integrated student support.
- Lead marketing efforts for the Field Placement Program, including updating the program website, and distributing informational materials.
Employer Relations, Expansion, and Program Coordination
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with a diverse range of legal employers, including judicial, public interest, government, corporate, and private firm placements.
- Organize events such as judicial panels, field placement information sessions, and alumni networking opportunities to engage students and promote the program.
- Expand placement opportunities by identifying and building relationships with new employers.
- Work with program assistants and other administrative staff to ensure efficient departmental operations.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to develop policies, enhance programming, and ensure alignment with institutional goals.
- Communicate regularly with the Registrar and Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs to manage course registration, scheduling, and related administrative matters.
- Collect and analyze feedback from employers and students to continually improve the quality and relevance of the program.
Student Advising and Career Development
- Advise students on field placement opportunities, application strategies, and compliance with ABA experiential learning requirements as it relates to field placements.
- Provide individualized feedback on judicial field placement application materials, such as resumes and cover letters.
- Counsel students on career planning and securing post-graduate employment, in conjunction with the CDO, leveraging employer relationships to create opportunities for students.
Required Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school with a strong academic record.
- At least seven (7) years of professional legal experience required.
- Experience teaching or supervising students in field placements or clinical legal setting required. Teaching experience, particularly in experiential legal education courses, preferred. Experience working with diverse populations and promoting inclusion.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Admission to the state bar.
- Law school teaching or training experience, particularly in experiential legal education courses, preferred.
- Familiarity with ABA experiential learning standards
- Established relationships with judges, public interest organizations, government agencies, corporate legal departments, and private firms.
The hiring salary range is $125,000-148,000. Salary is commensurate with experience.
