About the Position:

The Syria Justice & Accountability Centre (SJAC) is seeking an accountant to perform both accounts payable and accounts receivable functions. Founded in 2012, SJAC promotes justice and accountability in Syria by ensuring that human rights violations are comprehensively documented, and that documentation data is securely preserved, catalogued, and analyzed to advance transitional justice and peace-building. The accountant will conduct SJAC’s routine payments and general accounting functions, including direct monthly expenses and payroll The accountant can maintain a flexible work schedule if they maintain a punctual completion of duties. Depending on the nature of applicants, SJAC will consider selecting accounting services through one of the following arrangements: (a) an individual consultant paid by an hourly rate or (b) a contractual agreement for accounting services. All organizations/businesses applying must identify and name an individual accountant in their application.

This hourly position is expected to work approximately 35 to 50 hours/month, with additional time during peak times of programmatic activity, annual filings, and audit-support.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform all general organizational accounting via Quickbooks online;
  • Prepare and monitor accounts payable on a weekly basis under the direction of the SJAC’s Finance Consultant;
  • Allocate expenses (fringe, occupancy pool, etc.) between direct and indirect costs on a monthly basis;
  • Prepare indirect cost reporting and support the Finance Consultant in analyzing indirect rate;
  • Reconcile and close the financial books and records for each monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close;
  • Support the SJAC Finance Consultant with preparing financial reporting to donors and filings with IRS and state authorities;
  • Support the SJAC Finance Consultant in compliance and audit-preparation;
  • Support the SJAC Finance Consultant in improving financial processes, including but not limited to the timekeeping and payroll systems.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or equivalent;
  • 3 years of financial or accounting experience, preferably with a nonprofit organization;
  • Strong GAAP accounting experience (general ledger, consolidations, reconciliations, compliance);
  • Experience in analyzing indirect costs and allocation cost pools preferred;
  • Proficiency in Quickbooks online and Excel;
  • Exceptional attention to detail;
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
