Description of Basic Functions and Responsibilities

OVERVIEW:

The Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Joint Community College District (Shasta College) sits at the northern end of the Sacramento Valley, surrounded by mountains to the north, east, and west. The area provides a wide array of outdoor amenities and activities with miles of hiking and biking trails, national parks, two lakes, and the Sacramento River. The main campus is located in the city of Redding, population 90,000. DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To participate in planning, organizing, and developing curriculum and objectives for preschool education programs; function as teacher in an early childhood education classroom; and provide instruction to and supervision of practicum teachers, student workers and volunteers. Employees in this classification receive limited supervision within a standard framework of policies and procedures. This job class is responsible for the implementation and teaching of early childhood education programs and curriculum for students enrolled at the Early Childhood Education Center.

CLASSIFICATION:Range 35 on the current Classified Salary Schedule, 40 hours per week, 10 months per year. Work assignment hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. This is a classified position with a default CalPERS retirement.

SUPERVISOR: Director of Early Childhood Education Center or designee

Typical Duties, Knowledge and Ability

Essential Functions:

• Participates in planning, developing, and teaching early childhood education curriculum through observation, reflection, and documentation.
• Provides classroom training via a team-teaching approach; independently instructs Center students and college practicum students through prepared curriculum.
• Meets with practicum student teachers weekly to reflect on current assignments and plan curriculum.
• Prepares, researches, develops, and recommends the selection of instructional materials and/or equipment for use in classroom activities.
• Organizes learning or instructional environment to enhance the educational environment of the model laboratory site.
• Through observation, reflection, assessment, and daily documentation, evaluate children’s social, emotional, and cognitive growth.
• Works with and trains practicum teachers
• Provides input and participates in practicum teacher evaluations and Practicum (ECE 8) in person classroom meetings.
• Models appropriate teaching techniques for ECE 7 Early Childhood Observation and Assessment and ECE 8 Teaching Practicum for Young Children class students, teacher, and visitors.
• Communicates with parents, staff, and administration regarding the needs, special problems, and progress of early childhood education center students, practicum teachers, and volunteers.
• Trains, directs, and coordinates the work of practicum teachers, and student workers.
• Supervises early childhood education center children to maintain a safe and effective learning environment; ensures proper maintenance of indoor and outdoor school materials and equipment as defined by title 22 and National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
• Observes early childhood education center children and takes behavioral notes and communicates those observations to parents in formal conferences.
• Maintains and organizes curriculum, weekly plans, observations, and documentation.
• Plans and prepares snacks and meals for children.
• Administers first aid and implements emergency procedures in compliance with District policy and Title 22 and NAEYC.
• Works independently when the Early Childhood Education Center Director is not under facility designee.
• Attends weekly and monthly meetings with Early Childhood Education co-teachers and ECE faculty.
• Performs other related duties similar to the above in scope and function as required.

Knowledge of:

• Early childhood education teaching performance expectations.
• Curriculum planning and implementation.
• Child development principles.
• Appropriate assessment and evaluation methods and techniques used to determine achievement levels of early childhood education center students and practicum teachers.
• A variety of curriculum/instructional materials, tools, and methods, including Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) and Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ).
• General understanding of children with an individualized education plan (IEP).
• Correct English usage, grammar, and spelling.

Ability to:

• Carry out an educational program for early childhood education center children and practicum teachers.
• Understand the needs of students and to relate effectively to those needs in a learning environment.
• Coordinate and direct the work of others.
• Effectively communicate in both oral and written forms.
• Maintain a confident but patient and courteous attitude toward students and practicum teachers.
• Effectively supervise early childhood education center students and practicum teachers in a variety of situations.
• Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
• Exercise tact, diplomacy, and good judgment in dealing with early childhood education center students, practicum teachers, parents, and the public.
• Remain calm and patient in stressful situations with emotional intelligence.
• Maintain the security and confidentiality of specified records and information.
• Maintain accurate behavioral records and curriculum, including daily documentation, DRDP documentation, weekly curriculum, and observation/reflection.
• Operate standard office and instructional equipment as appropriate to area of assignment including Microsoft Office Suite, iPad, app platforms, desktop computers, copy machines, laminator, and axis audiovisual equipment.
• Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties.
• Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required dynamic co-teaching.

Experience/Education

Education/Experience Required:

• Must possess or obtain within one semester of employment a regular Child Development Master Teacher Permit issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
• Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field.
• A physical examination, Livescan, and immunizations as required by Community Care Licensing and Shasta College will be required.
• Possession of a valid pediatric First Aid CPR certificate.
• Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students, as well as staff members and students with physical and/or learning disabilities.
